Kennis Music ‘Disturbed’ By Reports Saying Kelly Hansome Is Back On The Label
Kennis music said today, that it ‘cannot confirm’ if singer Kelly Hansome’s upcoming album will be on the label; and that they are are ‘disturbed’
Kennis CEO Keke Ogungbe tells us the singer has apologised to the label for past misdeeds, and a reconciliation has been brokered by concerned parties. But, no documents have been signed concerning any album; and that his new single, the controversial track where Kelly attacked Abuja-based label Chocolate City and its acts, is ‘not in any way endorsed by the label’.
‘Yes we’re very open to discussions with our acts, be it past or present. And in cases where the terms are right, we can even work with artistes we had earlier washed our hands off. No sentiments here; this is a business’ Ogungbe told us in a telephone conversation. Look at Eedris, we’re working together again, and everyone is happy. But on Kelly, I can’t tell you whether we will release his album or not. But the single you’re talking about was not released by Kennis music. Artistes who are responsible to a label do not release singles on their own. They hand over the master and let the labels do the rest. And I consider it a bit misleading for some reporters to say Kelly’s upcoming album will be on our label when we have not told anybody that’.
‘The only albums we’re pushing right now are those of Eedris Abdulkareem, KSB, Essence, Jaywon and The Pulse. We’re also planning to release Femi’s album as well as Goldie’.
Kelly’s new single, ‘Chocolate Boys (Freestyle) was released last week, shortly after media reports emerged saying the controversial singer was back on Kennis.
‘We’re a responsible label. We want to make music, make people happy, and unite the industry. We’re not about hate or controversy’. Ogungbe says. ‘We work with everybody: Mohits, Chocolate City, Storm, name it. We are all one. so why would we support any kind of music that preaches anything contrary to that’?
LIFE AFTER DIVORCE
As usual ,this Friday i am about to thread on topic that most people dread to touch even with a shovel, but kedu nke barber na udene ?.
I am not in the business of making you happy or saying things to make friends ,i am in the business of saying it the way it should be and the way God wanted it to be said.
To many people Divorce is better than coffin ,which is true .
To others if you are not happy in marriage better divorce which is also true ,but can you just shut up and come with me to hear ugheli danda ?
TODAY ,i am about to come hard on our women and next shall be on our men,but all is for odi nma ndi igbo/Africa and taking back our LOVE and family hood ,which we sold for foreign culture that is uselessing our future and living.
Your life happiness ended the day you took your marriage to a judge or the day you get yourself a DIVORCE lawyer ,that was the day you wave bye bye to your joy and happiness .
I
n this respect ,i am talking of marriage that was contracted in African home town ,not the likes obtained in Western world, such as the one you meet a spouse on the train, shopping mall or disco and in next hour both of you rush to Marriage registry and come out HUS-BOUND AND WIPE .
Which owing to the same chaotic way it was contracted ,it ends the same way and no crocodile tear ,no love lost because none was gained to start with .
That is where a man or woman will wake up the next morning and tell the spouse in a conversationary tone "Dear , i want you to give me a divorce" and the spouse without blinking an eye lid will respond "NO PROBLEM,WHAT TIME ?",,tell your lawyer to talk to my lawyer, and will i visit you atimes ?.
When you are African born and breed and you got married in African soil and suddenly you discovered that Divorce is the inn thing ,then i have message for you...Do not rush me for i am still coming to deliver my message.
Ladies here is where i have axe to grind with you because 97% of divorce are generated by women, who felt that they want to be independent of a man but depend on him for upkeep and the demands of life.
When you Divorce a man ,that means you are fed up with him and his way of life, you do not want anything to do with him.He is evil that you cannot stand and do not wish to have anything to do with.
But you lied ,big time to yourself, your children and posterity.
If you hate the man long enough that you ran quickly to divorce him ,why then did you accept CHILD SUPPORT ,ALIMONY and other jargons that benefit the lady from same BAD MAN ?,does it mean that the man is not bad ,but you want freedom to taste things out there without restrictions or questions ?
Why do you share in his wealth ? oburu na iju ekwensu ,iju ya na olu ya nile [if you reject evil ,you will hate all his works and benefit].
If you hate man enough to Divorce him ,you will hate the Money he was compelled to pay you under tears and duress .You cannot hate him and love his money and alimony ,it is Evil standard.
Does it not occur to you that ,you are killing that same man every month end ?,that he also hate you every month end, and you remember him every month end ?,which brings to mind ,you are still in LOVE WITH him through his money .
Do you not think that if you are to be involved in an accident and have 5 seconds to live and he is the only person that will save you ,i am sure that he will RATHER drink posion than to lift a hand toward saving you ,so that you will continue exploiting his life, because your demise is a relief to him...Yes,once you divorced him and continue extorting from him, money that he do not have, money that he would prefer to use for other things and you conspire with a judge that know nothing about parenthood and nail the man to a cross, that was the day you killed another human and in this case the father of your children.
If you hate the man enough to divorce him ,please hate his money enough to reject it.
If you do not want his relationship ,do not relate to his money. If you can handle a family on your own ,why bother asking the HUS-BOUND to slave for you ?.
If you hate the man enough to divorce him ,better hate the children he brought to this world with your consent, give them back to him,but if you hold unto his children and, extort money from him ,call it child support or alimony ,then you never divorced him .... YOU ARE TAKING HIM TO CLEANERS to make his life miserably.
Just look at the mirror in your house now and you will see some inscription on your forehead,it reads FRAUD.
Do not pretend that you do not know that the man you are extorting is cursing you and the day he met you at the end of every month ,when he will pay you for blackmailing him with support of a judge.
Also you curse him every month end he delayed in paying your ransom.
Tommorrow some of you will talk about 419,fraud and evil ,is there any thing that is more horrifying than a man took his time to marry a woman ,bring her to his home to be his wife, make her mother of his children and the woman owing to some stupid western culture will weave a fetter of Iron and hung it around the man,s neck.Which will make the man she formerly confessed loving to be paying her RANSOM to the rest of the man,s life, which the woman made useless in the first place.I wonder what some of this women will say about kidnappers that demand ransom?,but i prefer kidnappers because it is one time event ,but divorce is monthly ransom paid with tears and wears.
Listen and listen good ,every penny you collected as Child support or alimony is EXTORTION AND EXPLOITATION and do not worry about praying, for you can fool men but not God.If you want child support move back to your husband and both of you can bring the children up with parental care and love, but if you think that you are WESTERN ENOUGH to be liberated ,then stop extorting money from the man you,ve RUINED for life.
Before i go ,i also wonder why it never occured to women that once you divorce a man ,you should also divorce the SURNAME ,not after
you divorce a man ,you retain his surname and you think you have sense ?.
Have,nt you done enough damages in his life ?
When you divorce a man and took his children ,what do you tell the children about the dad ? ,that your husband who is the father of your children is USELESS drunk or stupid ?,but you OPEN UP ENOUGH to get pregnant from same useless and stupid man .Do you know that automatically you are telling the children that they are product of unprotected sex ? that they are offspring of Drunkard and which means they will end up been drunk and Stupid .
Do you tell them that thier father is useless ? that you are the wife of a useless Husband who brought into this world USELESS CHILDREN ?.
Did you consider for a minute that everything you said to your children about thier father has a big role to play in what they will be in life ?.
Do you accept the fact that you killed the happiness of THE MAN ,THE CHILDREN,YOUR OWN PARENTS,YOUR INLAWS,YOUR BROTHERS,SISTERS AND many members of the community ?,because your topic will always bring back bad feelings.
I said it before and i am saying it again ,if you cannot pray ,do not marry. If you think that marriage has a clause called "DIVORCE" better continue enjoying STREET SEX .
Do not bring children into this world and tore them apart by forcing them to choose between you and thier father who is more EVIL.

No big deal acting nude — Nse Etim, actress
When you talk about Nollywood star, Nse Ekpe Etim, what comes to mind is a daring, no-holds-bared actress. Etim symbolizes a complete professional in her area of specialty: acting. Not many would find the luxury of enjoying what Etim does on screen because her role interpretation is one in a thousand. She is one actress that takes her work seriously. She works when there is work to do and plays when it is time for it. No matter how crazy or unpopular a script might be, if it appeals to Etim, she dives into it head long. Yes, this actress takes whatever role she is assigned. Even if it means acting nude or lying in a coffin, she is all for it!
Etim’s story is interesting. She summed it up in this way: “It just happened to me. I came in the first time in 1997. I left and went into banking and other industries. Then, I came back again with the movie, Reloaded and that’s it”.
The graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Calabar explained why she left Nollywood and took up a job in the bank. “I went in search of greener pastures and it was very interesting. It is the lesson of life. I came back because I didn’t feel fulfilled as I did, and as I wanted to be. I rejoined the industry two years ago. I came back and I felt better,” she says.
Although, when Etim first stormed tinsel town, it was with the movie, Venom of Justice Part 2, she has since acted in many other movies such as Scars of Womanhood and Edikang. But then judging by her roles what one cannot take away from this fair-complexioned beauty from Akwa Ibom State is her ability to tread where angels dare not walk. Blockbuster asked how Etim feels being famous for her daring roles in movies.
She says: “Acting is my job. I am only doing my job. I did a movie where I was lying in a coffin. Are you going to ask me if those were an attachment to the coffin too? No. It was my job. I was acting. It was interesting. To lie down in a box is interesting but if you are dead, it’s a coffin. When you have signed up as an actor, you will do anything the script tells you to do. That is it for me.”
On whether she can act nude, the Abuja-based actress, who also runs a catering service has this to say: “Acting nude is part of the job. Because Nigeria has not grown that much, I won’t do it because of that but yes, if it makes sense in the movie where a woman is killed in the water and she was dead and naked, there would be a body there, wouldn’t it? In that case, I’ll prefer to act and do my job. I will always do my job. But it will never be like if you give me this amount of money I will act nude. No, I won’t act nude for money.”
The fast talker maintained that she intends to act all her life and advocated some form of learning to really bring back Nollywood to its feet.
Etim expressed her opinion on the backdrop of the new film school, Royal Art Academy, that producer Emem Isong recently established. “Then, it was the best of Nollywood, and towards the middle we had the death of Nollywood, we now have the rebirth of Nollywood,” the actress volunteers.
She says further: “I see a brand new crop of actors coming up with a lot of confidence. The fact that you read Theatre Arts does not necessarily mean you would be a good actor or television presenter. Learning to act for television is different and learning how to act for film is different. Yes, you get the basics, you get the grounding, with the film school, what you get is exactly what we are looking for, I think it’s a good thing that people are giving back to the society and in our little way, we are giving back.”
Pretty but single Etim, however, confessed that she is not in a relationship right now. “I do not have a relationship and I am not married. I used to describe a man of my dream and all that when asked this kind of question but the truth is that who God brings is the man for me.”
For Etim, what drives her is her ability to assume and stay in the character she is portraying in a movie even as every role has been challenging because, “I have to play different roles.”
To her numerous fans, Etim is grateful for their consistent support over the years. “To my fans, I am human, so sometimes I would fail them but they should stand by me. That’s all I ask for. And to all my friends and everyone who has been there for me, I am saying thank you very much. It’s been a really tough world, tough journey; they should please continue to support me.”
Etim’s long life dream, she concludes, is to use acting to affect lives positively.

Many People Have Bad Impression About Me—Segun Arinze
Segun Aina Padonou also known as Segun Arinze is one of the stars in Nollywood. Arinze has put in over 25 years in acting and is currently the factional president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. He spoke with TOPE OLUKOLE on a number of issues. Arinze
You have been around as an actor for quite a while, when exactly did it all start?
It started way back in the 80s when I was introduced by a friend called Ayo Orowale and ever since, I haven’t looked back. I am the eldest in the family of seven, my father is late and he used to travel a lot. Therefore, when he came back to Lagos, I joined the Anansa players where I had one or two performances. I went to the University of Ife where I trained as an actor under Chuks Mike in the Department of Dramatic Arts, University of Ife now OAU.
Can you share some of your adventures so far with us?
Do I really have adventures? I have always been working. I don’t see them as adventures; I see them as a professional experiences for I trained to be an actor. For everything I do, I give God the glory, because it is not by my power or strength. It is God-given and I am blessed with so much talent. I sing, write, produce, direct, act and do so many other things as well. I see the job as a profession that puts clothes in your bag, food on your table and as well pay your bills. So, I take the job seriously.
What are the challenges you have faced in the movie industry over the years?
I have gone through a lot in terms of challenges. Challenges would definitely come because as you go along, you know there are hurdles and as you scale them, it prepares you for the next level. I had many challenges in terms of acting, in terms of working with people, in terms of people not wanting to believe you.
Some will believe you and some will not want to believe you, some will write you off and some will thumbs up for you. I do cope with challenges because I usually say challenges prepare me for the next level. Even when I was a singer under Premium Music and I had my name changed to Segun Arinze, I faced challenges as well.
Even changing the name itself was a challenge because it was not easy changing my name from Segun Aina to Segun Arinze, but because the label felt it was going to sound like the name of a Fuji artiste. Other documents bear my real names, Aina Padonou. For me, it’s a challenge, the challenge that it posed was that of having to assume a new identity. Everywhere I go, people ask how come, why are you bearing this kind of name and all that?
I make bold to say without being arrogant, or being stupid. It would have been Segun Arinze, I haven’t seen any Segun Arinze anywhere else, that somehow makes it unique for me, and it helps in propelling me to the top. One of the hardest things is when you get to the top, staying at the top and being relevant at every corner just like people tying fame down is a big challenge.
In Hollywood, it is said that in your best five years, if you can’t tie fame down, then you are out of it. Most people are carried away by fame. They just do one or two things, people start praising them, and it gets into their heads. Fame is a very terrible thing, it can possess you. You do not let fame possess you. You possess fame, so that you can control fame and keep it in check because it can mislead you. There are also many more challenges that come with acting.
When I did Silent Night, there were many challenges playing that role, Black Arrow. I also lost an award in the process when we had Reel Awards from Encomium, because one of the judges on the panel said he had just been robbed and shortly after that, he watched the movie, Silent Night and said no! no!, this was too real. Moreso, many people think I am a very terrible person because of the roles I play. I am a very private person, extremely private. I can’t reconcile acting with my person, they are two distinct things that I do, I don’t even mix them up. When I finished, I drop the script and it ends there.
In all these years, what will you describe as your greatest regret?
I have learnt not to regret anything. Regret is a burden, it weighs you down, it puts a big burden on you. What I do is learn from my mistakes and move on. Just like in the city of New York, everyone is moving very fast, the same thing about Broad Street in Lagos, everybody is moving and no one waits for anyone.
You have been an actor all these while, have you ever thought of being a producer yourself?
I am a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria; I am a director and an associate member of Directors Guild of Nigeria. When the time comes for me to produce a movie, I will do it and if otherwise, it is not mandatory. We can’t all be producers and directors just like not forcing everyone to be a pastor. You must have the experience and wherewithal to be a producer and a director.
You are one of the pioneers of the Hip-hop music in Nigeria, why did you take a leave?
I thought I had enough of it and I had to go. I could not stand the things they were doing, that amounted to nonsense. The terms and conditions of premier music wasn’t right and conducive for me, I didn’t like it. Moreover, I went back into full acting.
Who is your wife?
My wife is my wife, why do want to know who my wife is? Did you not see her when I got married?
What is your philosophy of life?
Simplicity, take every step one day at a time, never be in hurry. Also, try to live life to the fullest but be careful about that. I believe in God, I live by His tenets, and I give Him all the glory for whatever he gives me
What would you like to change in the movie industry or the profession?
I would like us to be very professional in the ideal sense. I will like us to take and do things the way it should be done, no half measures, no management, no short cut. Do it the way everybody does it around the world and you find out that you will go very far.
I have dual personality, says Basket-mouth
Bright Okpocha is not as popular as Basket-mouth, but both names belong to the same person. He is a native of Abia State and a graduate of Sociology and Anthropology from UNIBEN, who dropped his certificates to become a stand-up comedian. In this interview with ALEXANDRA IBIWOYE, he talks about his two personalities, why it’s difficult for him to be Basket-mouth off stage, the challenges he’s facing and the project he’s working on, among other issues.
What kind of person is the comedian, Basket-mouth?
Basket-mouth as I think I know him is practical with his delivery and analysis of his environment, down to earth in character.
My personality as Bright Okpocha is different from Basket-mouth’s personality, call Basket-mouth my alter ego.
In few words, Basket-mouth is a cool chap.
What has inspired you to start off as a comedian?
I was inspired, when I watched Eddie Murphy’s performance in ‘Delirious’, when I then watched Ali Baba perform on the Charly Boy Show; it made me confirm to myself that I can do it.
Could you tell us about your family background?
I’m the third born of seven children, five boys and two girls.
We lost our eldest brother six years ago and my dad last year, so in total we are seven including my mum.
My parents trained us well, provided all our needs, and were very supportive, especially with us making decisions in life.
Three of my younger ones are still in the University, my younger sister has graduated, and my elder brother is married and based in the UK. Need I say more?
At what point would you say was a turning point for you in your career?
I’m yet to experience a turning point in my career.
What are the challenges you face as a comedian?
Well, I get to face a lot of challenges as a comedian and as well as a celebrity (if I can be addressed as one that is) few of the challenges is staying fresh with my performance and delivery, maintaining the profile, being politically correct at all times, I live a double life (Basket mouth and Bright) most people expect me to be basket mouth when I’m not on stage.....now that’s pretty difficult.
What or who would you say has been a source of motivation to you in the comedy industry?
A whole lot of people, from comedians to friends and clients, both in Nigeria and beyond, some of these people are my parents and siblings: 2 face, Ali Baba, I Go Dye, Okey Bakassi, Dotun Makun, Bovi; it’s a long list.
Most especially though, my life, my future, the struggle and my dream was the biggest motivation I got.
What would you attribute your success in the comedy industry to?
I don’t consider myself as successful yet, I’m still climbing, but the journey so far can be attributed to my talent and the fact that I’m always ready to milk it as much as I can.
A lot of hard work and focus as well.
Do you engage in other things aside comedy?
Yes, I run an entertainment and events management company, we provide entertainment contents for event, that’s one thing that always keep me very busy because we are trying to expand.
How do you cope with your experiences with fans?
It has its good and bad sides. Some fans are on point and always nice, while some are not, they come at me sometimes with so much disrespect and insults, expecting me to swallow all I get since I’m a comedian, forgetting that when I’m not on stage I’m a normal person like them.
Some ask for funds, some punch or smack me as a way of expressing their feelings; I know it’s the price I have to pay, so I’m not complaining.
Although I sometime wish it can stop... big dream I guess! It’s a Nigeria thing; fans outside the country are a bit different with theirs.
Could you tell us your craziest fan experience?
Luckily I’ve not experienced a crazy fan before (Laughs).
What do you have to say to up and coming comedians?
You guys should be more hard working, more creative and focus, don’t enter the game for the money or fame but for the love of it.
What are your plans for the future?
I intend to officially get married, I also plan to go main stream, and I’m walking towards that path already though.
Should we be expecting anything new from the stables of Basket-mouth?
Most definitely, I’m working on a series of projects, in Nigeria and beyond.
I’m working on the Nigerian version of Lord of the Ribs which will feature some international comedians and musicians, everything has been confirmed; it’s just to punch the start button.
I’m also trying to restart my monthly comedy show (Laffs n Jamz).....just to name a few.
What would you say is the unique attribute you possess that differentiates you from your other colleagues in the industry?
I think it’s the fact that I carry dreads, the fact that I really don’t crack jokes but tell funny stories/facts, the fact that I have no boundaries on my way of thinking and delivery, the fact that I don’t use any Nigerian comedian as my yard stick in terms of achievements and target, I actually don’t see any comedian as a competitor as I’m my own competitor.
Could you highlight to us the pains and gains involved in being a comedian?
People don’t take you seriously, and when you are joking they take you serious, and I think the gains of being a comedian is that it allows us the opportunity of saying it all without mincing words, which I love doing.
Finally what problems do you think are inherent in the comedy industry and how can they be solved?
The fact that some comedians steal other comedian’s jokes/material, especially the younger comedians, most of them entered the industry for the money, it can’t be stopped or changed, all I do is work harder.
Any final words to your fans and the general public?
I want to say thanks to all my fans for the support and love, you guys are my energy and drive. I won’t be here without each and every one of you.
I love you guys...and for the haters...I love you guys too, you people make me work harder. God bless.
Journalists’ Kidnapper Arrested - Jonathan
One of the kidnappers of four Lagos journalists and their driver in Abia State has been arrested, according to President Goodluck Jonathan.
The four abducted journalists are Wahab Oba, who is the chairman of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); Sylvester Okereke, Adolphus Okonkwo and Shola Oyeyepo.
They were taken along with their driver, Yekini Aziz, at Umuafor Ukwu, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, on Sunday on their way back to Lagos after an NUJ National Executive Council meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Their kidnappers had requested a ransom of N250 million to release them.
The president, who did not mention anything about the fate of the kidnapped victims, disclosed the news in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during a dinner organised for him by the state government on Thursday night.
President Jonathan described the rising rate of kidnapping as “extremely embarrassing” and regretted the involvement of prominent traditional rulers in the dastardly act, which he said had become a form of business and commended the role of security agencies in tackling the menace.
According to him, “government will not hesitate to unleash the full force of the law against perpetrators and sponsors of the crime. I commend the security agencies that apprehended one of these criminals yesterday (Wednesday).
“And I will use this opportunity to make it very clear again. There are some communities where kidnapping is becoming a business. Some very senior people are involved and we are tracking them.
“This is because when some people are kidnapped, some people come all the way from Lagos as negotiators, very senior people who have all the degrees in the world, who people respect but they have all degenerated to the level of abating and associating with kidnapping.
The Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswil Akpabio, had appealed to the Federal Government to reimburse the state on some of the Federal Government’s projects executed by the state while describing the president as the replica of the Biblical Joshua that emerged in the year of Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee.
He said the reimbursement would enable the state redirects the fund into other critical areas of need.

WHAT DOES GOLDIE DO FOR A LIVING?
Susan Harvey is one of the female artistes in Nigeria. The lady who relocated from America back to Nigeria to face music has had her own share of negative media reports.
First, it was reported that Goldie is into woman-to-woman affair. secondly, we hear in the city that she was named Bimpe and hails from Ekiti State of Nigeria and that the Susan Harvey’s name she uses is to cover up for her sly deeds while in America.
Again, news flittered out that Goldie was engaged in an amorous affair with OJB, a popular music producer who equally acts as her partner in the business of ‘white substance’ popularly called ‘Coke’ by the players.
All these are just mere rumours which do not really hold ground aside the one that alleged her of business that has to do with a particular noxious but profitable white powder while she was in America, this, we gathered, enriched the 30 year-old beautiful lady.
But if what Goldie herself is anything to go by, then her source of wealth should be disclosed as she is been selling dummies to people that she got her money from the large legacy her late mum left behind. Hmmn.
“Goldie, for those who don’t know lives in a big mansion in Lekki and cruises around in different state of the art automobiles. This is an artiste that does not have any brand endorsement, no solid recording deal, she has no other income than singing and to the best of our knowledge, she has never had a hit song in the Nigerian market that would have fetched her stupendous wealth. The only rational explanation seems to be the fact that she is married to this Harvey guy who is said to be an oil and gas expatriate.” A source said
How she lives beyond her earnings has become a big issue that only Goldie could provide answer to.
WHAT DOES GOLDIE DO FOR A LIVING?
Goldie
First, it was reported that Goldie is into woman-to-woman affair. secondly, we hear in the city that she was named Bimpe and hails from Ekiti State of Nigeria and that the Susan Harvey’s name she uses is to cover up for her sly deeds while in America.
Again, news flittered out that Goldie was engaged in an amorous affair with OJB, a popular music producer who equally acts as her partner in the business of ‘white substance’ popularly called ‘Coke’ by the players.

Kelly Hansome Fires Back At MI, Others
Kelly Hansome
Wrong.
For while the self-styled Nigerian music class prefect might be quietly going about mending fences with Kenny Ogungbe and company, Kelly still has no intentions of extending the olive branch to everyone else.
Love him, hate him or even loathe him, one thing is for sure; the moment you’ve heard about him and/or his antics, it’s almost impossible to be indifferent to Kelly Hansome. Very much like that housefly that circles your rechargeable lantern while you battle through a ball of eba when PHCN has taken the light, Kelly Hansome’s taunts and colourful remarks are seemingly harmless, yet impossible to ignore.
In a rear interview he granted,(pun intended, don’t worry just read on and you’d understand why), Kelly Hansome talks about his importance to the industry, fake twitter accounts and the size of a certain BET Award nominees’ behind.
Let’s clear it up, is your name Kelly Hansome or Kelly Handsome?
Kelly Hansome (no ‘D’)
What was life like growing up in Owerri? Where do you live now?
Growing up in O-Town was so much fun. I live in the United States now.
As a child, how was Kelly? Were you the troublemaking type, the class bully or the quiet type?
I would say I was ‘actively adventurous’.
Did you like school? Where you the class prefect at your primary or secondary school?
Hell yeah, I do! Yes I was a prefect in secondary school.
Your first record deal and album came out some years ago, how was that experience?
I learnt a lot about the business and got basic exposure.
How did you meet Kenny and D1?
They heard my songs in the club and got in contact, came over to the States and the rest was history.
Kelly what went wrong in that relationship?
We had communication problems but we’ve already trashed out issues and I’m on to the next one.
What’s the problem between you and Wande Coal?
I have no problems with him. He was just unfortunate to have plunged into a battle he knew nothing about but he’s still my boy.
Do you honestly feel Wande was referring to you on ‘Who born the Maga’?
Sure. Questions to ponder – how did they know I am an Arsenal fan? My production company-Uglybeatz has a signature of a lion roar but Don Jazzy and Wande were confused on whether it was a lion or a dog hence… ‘like a dog i’mma chain you, like a lion i’mma tame you’. Nothing goes on in the industry without me knowing about it so no need to play childish pranks.
How much of your issues with D’Banj are motivated by tradition and how much of it is commercially motivated?
I already said it all. He clearly claims he is the Igwe which represents ‘a King’ in Igbo land but how can I be an Oba if I’m not even a Yoruba man, not even from the royal family or a heir to the throne? We Africans respect tradition and culture; it’s a taboo because if I claim to be the Oba they will equally get cross (with me). He launched his first attack on me when he says, ‘don’t know about you but I’m handsome.’ My name is Kelly Hansome. Okay, maybe that was coincidence, what about ‘African Michael Jackson’? I used to be known as Madonna Michael Jackson in my school days so he was directly trying to claim his own title was continental and not just limited to a school compound. I never raised an eyebrow at that but we have people in house (Mo’Hits) who keep us posted.
Then I guess Terry G can say okay, Kelly Hansome stole tile tile from me, or doesn’t he have a right to?
‘Tile’ is a general FESTAC word whose origin can be traced back to the Burkinham palace of Plantashun Boyz. The full word is ‘Tile pumping’ which means sexy girl – a girl who has all the qualities a man wants in a woman, full option. I used this slang in my song True love. How can a houseboy call his mentor a copycat? He named his album after my song Free Me which is a slogan I started using after my deal with Myke records was over. Now, Terry hardly writes a song without using that phrase but I have left it for him. He further proved himself (as my boy) when he made another version of my son, ‘Everybody shout Halleluyah… Maga don pay’. But he is free to copy because I’m bringing more hits than Jazzy.
How did the relationship between yourself and 2 Shotz go from that of love to one where you say something foul about him?
Point of correction, I said nothing foul so don’t use that word else you’re telling me you’re unprofessional because the press should not be on anyone’s side. He is an elder in the industry, no doubt, but his lines (on his recent single Oyoyo) sounded crazy to my fans who kept emailing me so I made it clear that he was not an issue for them to worry about, ‘who the F is 2-Shotz when I killed Mo’Hits with one shot?’
When last did you two speak?
Have you ever met MI before? He says the two of you are friends…?
Sure, a couple of times.
Why did you decide to go after MI?
Because I was the only one he indirectly insulted in that track (Fast Money Fast Cars). Think about it, Kelly Hansome – Too Much Money - Maga Don Pay - Fast Money Fast Cash; talking about girls and their quest for the rich and famous guys (See the connection?). He mentioned a couple of names but never dissed anyone of them. So how can a short fan who I don’t even know from Adam and doesn’t know nothing about me, neither can he feed nor clothe me say I’m not a man? You can’t even tell an okada man that because it’s the biggest insult you can think of and yet he says, ‘there’s only one Kelly I know, Kelly Rowlands’. Does one mention one’s name he does not know? He is the one whose sex is questionable because he’s got big ass like a woman. (Laughs heartily)
Have you heard his response to you on Jesse Jagz new album?
I heard his weak response but that wasn’t to me because he hasn’t answered my questions yet and mentioning my name gave his track cheap promotion and he knew it. He only proved he is my no. 1 fan and I have no problems with that.
Are you on twitter? What’s your twitter name?
Yes..@kellyhansome. I was informed some guy has been impersonating me on twitter (@KELLY_HANDSOME) but I guess my management is working on that.
Give us an insight on what to expect on your new album.
See, I’m not Naeto but I surely know my P!
If you ever meet any of these guys in a show or on the street, what would be the outcome?
I always mind my business but if I get a hard push, there’ll be an experience above normal.
Are there going to be even more names on the album?
If there’s any more noise making in my class, YES.
In your opinion, have you gained more fans over the past few months since ‘Igwe (Kom Kom)’ came out?
Lost a few but gained more credibility and millions of diehard fans.
Don’t you ever feel that you’re alienating yourself from the industry? Creating more enemies or don’t you care?
I am the industry.
What are your thoughts on the song ‘Maga No Need Pay’?
What’s the motive behind all the controversy you’re stirring up?
I am not stirring up controversy but revolution. The industry is shady and needs to be taken over.
~Kelly Hansome’s upcoming third album Namez of Noisemakerz currently has no release date.
Exclusive – Life Inside The Mohits Mansion
Front view of the property D'Banj, Don Jazzy and other Mohits stars call home
Deep inside your minds, you picture D’Banj living in a paradise of sorts, with remote-controlled sofas, bikini-clad waitresses, Gordon Ramsay-like chefs, Olympic-sized swimming pool, convertible B&O screens and some decor machinery that gives the entire house the feel of Don Jazzy’s beats and D’Banj’s charm?
Nah, the Maryland property D’Banj calls home is not anything close to what you’d expect. Definitely not a mansion; and not the type of celeb crib that make your eyes wanna jump out of their sockets – you know the kind you see on MTV cribs? Nah!
The Mohits duplex houses D’Banj, Don Jazzy, D’prince, Kayswitch, Dr SID and Wande Coal; with regular overnight/long time guests including Ikechukwu, Special ED, Sauce Kid and others.
Situated in a private estate behind Planet One Entertainment, in Maryland, Lagos, the Mohits property is referred to, by those who’ve been there, as a ‘hostel’ of sorts.
As you drive into the street, you already have an idea this is the home for the boys – what with the cars of Ikechukwu, Special ED, Sauce Kid and others parked outside.
The uniformed security guard gives you a plain sheet to write your name on, requesting you indicate who you’re seeing and your purpose. He locks you out as he goes in to confirm if you should be allowed in or not.
Once in, the first thing you notice is the set of diesel generators and a water tank, all competing for the little space in the compound. Don’t mind the diesel spills on the floor – everyone uses diesel in Lagos!
A security door leads you in, and after a set of mini stairs, you see the large living room to the right. This is where most visitors to the Mohits home end up. Here, you’re faced with a large portrait painting of D’Banj, as well as a dozen plaques arranged on a TV stand. There’s sparse furnishing downstairs, plenty of space, and queer painting.
But upstairs, the parlour is smaller, and functions more like a waiting room. The guys sleep upstairs, as well as work when necessary. An entire room functions as Don Jazzy’s studio – here is where most of the award-winning hits are baked. And just seconds away is D’Banj’s room. Inside D’Banj’s bedroom, there’s a painting of him on the wall, as well as one where his parents appear to be praying for him. His bed is queerly-shaped – almost circular – and coloured red! We’re unsure how many rooms are in the house, But Don Jazzy, D’Prince and Wande Coal are also believed to have their rooms upstairs.
With assistants and guards running around to get stuff done, and guests thronging in by the minute, it’s a busy atmosphere, all day, all week inside the choked apartment.
‘D’Banj spends a lot of time in his room, you don’t even know when he has guests or not. And not everyone is allowed to enter his room. He likes to be very coded’ a Mohits aide told us. ‘Infact you can’t even get upstairs except you’re a very important visitor or you’re close to the house’.
A Mohits worker tells us it’s deliberate to have everyone living together. ‘We’ve work together, live together, play together. That’s the idea. If Wande has an idea at 1AM, we can quickly rush to do studio and put it down. We’re a close-knit team and we like it like that. You know very much, that everyone of us can afford our own houses. And we all have different properties in different parts of Lagos. But no matter what, there’ll still be a general place for us to call home’.
There are rumours D’Banj has properties in his native Ogun state, and in Lekki, on the outskirts of Lagos. But nothing has been confirmed.
And, opinions are divided on why a set of young men who claim to earn dozens of millions per week would continue to live together in a property that can barely contain them and their guests. ‘It’s either they don’t earn as much as they claim, or they just don’t care. But if I were half as big as D’Banj or Wande, I wouldn’t live in a place like that’ an artiste who has spent nights in the house told us.
What we think? Aint nothing wrong with a bunch of bachelors cohabiting. It’s worked for them well so far – so why change a winning formular? In a matter of years, the wedding bells will start ringing. When D’Banj or Don Jazzy say ‘I Do’, then we’ll know it’s time for the boys of the Mohits mansion to get moving
Nigerian Artistes Beg Pirates To Sell CDs
Investigation revealed that the artistes pay the pirates a minimum of N10,000 for their work to be included in the works dubbed Alaba mix, which are circulated for three weeks.
NFC gathered further that any of the artistes who wants other tracks of new or yet-to-be-released album pirated pays more until the work is popular in the market.
Worse still, It was also gathered that apart from the upcoming artistes, pirated works of top musicians including 2face Idibia, Dbanj, Weird MC, Timaya and P-Sqare, among others, are in circulation.
Some of the hawkers who do not want their names mentioned, confirmed that the sale of Alaba mix is a major racket in Alaba International Market by top rated marketers and young ones.
The hawkers told NFC that a CD is sold for N70 and above wholesale, while it is sold to the final buyer at the rate of N100 or N150 depending on the number of CDs purchased and the bargaining power of the buyer
Eedris begs NB Plc
The musician at the centre of the controversy that trailed the cancelled concert, Eedris Abdulkareem chose the album launch venue to apologise to some management staff of the Iganmu, Lagos based brewing company for his unwarranted outbursts and embarrassing posture that caused millions of Nigerians the opportunity to see the much hyped America superstar rap artiste, 50 Cents perform.
And for the first since the former member of the defunct Remedies group began his petty war against the brewing giants, Eedris who had consistently denied ever reaching agreements with Town Criers, the event company that handled the botched concert over performance fees, agreed publicly that he was paid N3million.
Accompanied by the boss of Kennis Music, Kenny Ogungbe, the very humbled musician who became a cult hero with his hit song Jaga Jaga apologised to a stunned audience while also thanking NP PLC for giving his career a lift when he needed it most.
Although no statement has been made by NB PLC, an excited official of the company however told Showtime that “the move was the right thing to do. I’m sure the management will forgive him. That explains why he was allowed to perform on our platform tonight”.
Our reporter recalled that Eedris had been banished from performing on the platform of any concerts organised by the brewing company.
The action followed his unruly conduct at the 2004 edition of the company’s sponsored Star Mega Jams concert.
Apart from composing a song against the brewing giants, he also went further to lampoon 50 Cents in far away South Africa, accusing the American of calling Nigerians Monkeys, a claim many knew was false.
In addition, he denied ever reaching agreement with the event companies over his performance fee claiming that he had asked to be treated on the same platform with the visiting American.
Now that apologies have been tendered did, I hear someone say let the music play Nigerian Breweries?
Veteran actress, Mama T, to be buried July 15
Mama T
Toun, who starred as Mama T in the popular television drama “Fuji House of Commotion’’ was aged 72.
“We have just had a family meeting and have decided to give her a befitting burial next Thursday.
“Her exit remains a permanent loss to every member of the family but we cannot question God as she lived a glorious life,’’ Omolabake told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Meanwhile, a condolence register has been opened in her family house at 96, Brick Field St., Ebute Meta, Lagos.
Members of the cast of ”Fuji House of Commotion” are paying tribute to Mama T, who was also a dancer and vocalist.
Mama T’s husband in the drama series, Mr Kunle Bamtefa (Chief Fuji), said that her death was painful and a big loss.
Bamtefa told NAN on Thursday in Lagos that Oni was a thorough professional.
He said that the actress would be remembered for her care and willingness to render help.
“I have known her since 1973, and since then, we have remained quite close.
“We have worked together on stage and have stuck together like a family; that is why I am still finding it difficult to come to terms with her death,” he said.
Bamtefa said that the entire cast of the Fuji House of Commotion would miss Oni.
Another member of the cast, Mr Victor Eze (Alika), described Oni’s exit as a vacuum that would be hard to fill.
“She assumed dual roles by being the mother in the house and a mother among the cast.
“She was a source of inspiration to many people who had the opportunity of meeting her, including myself,” Eze said.
He noted that Oni’s professionalism earned her the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Mr Jude Orhora, also a cast in “Fuji House of Commotion”, said that Oni positively affected the lives of all the members of the cast and crew of the drama.
“Right now, I am at a loss as to what to say because she was like a mother to me; but we cannot question God.
“We pray God to give her family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Oni acted in another popular soap opera, “Checkmate” as well as the Kunle Afolayan’s debut movie, “Irapada”.
How Muma Gee, I planned ‘our love affair’ —Emeka Ike
Muma Gee and Emeka Ike
The new twist to the story, is the revelation by the celebrated actor, that the purported romance that blossomed between himself and female musician, Muma Gee, was a mere drama conceived to deceive the other contenders and viewers.
Emeka denies ever having an affair with Muma Gee, insisting that “what happened between us was planned to deceive viewers and my rivals.”
He berated Chioma Chukwuka over her worrisome attitude at the GUS camp, while taking on the Board of Trustees of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, amongst other issues addressed.
Excerpts.
Congratulation on your recent victory as the last man standing at the maiden edition of the Gulder Ultimate Search: Celebrity showdown. What was the experience like?
It was quite an experience, an adventure for me. I was at the show to learn how to live and to survive in the jungle. I also experienced the pain and travails of the poor hunter who forages in the jungle every day for survival. Those were lifetime lessons I learnt while sojourning in the jungle.
What really happened between you and Muma Gee? And what role did Chioma Chukwuka play in the whole affair?
The whole drama was conceived as a way of making the reality show lively. When Muma Gee came up with the idea, I was fascinated and quickly suggested that we got my wife informed about it.
Surprisingly my wife gave her consent to the idea. We informed Muma Gee’s finance who equally consented to the idea.
The ‘love show’ was a make-believe. While my colleagues in the jungle were misbehaving and saying all sorts of things against us, we were just laughing at them. They didn’t understand what was going on.
We used that medium to play tricks on everybody. It was a drama of deception that was put up to make a statement and nothing beyond the obvious.
But one of the house mates, Chioma Chukwuka refused to be fooled?
She couldn’t come up with evidence and her suspicion was not established. At the end, she only succeeded in exposing her real person. As a self-acclaimed born again Christian, she had all the opportunity to display the attributes of a true Christian or “born again” but she failed miserably.
The camp provided a platform for everyone to showcase his or her other hidden attributes, instead Chioma chose to expose the other side of her life. I used the platform to consolidate on my skill and talent as an actor and the result is what you saw happen between Muma Gee and myself.
Muma Gee was our guest at my Thanksgiving service and I’m happy today, she is getting married very soon.
You were also accused of being cunning and deceitful by your fellow house mates. Was it part of the ploy to win the star prize?
Smartness is the right word to use here. I think it was smartness that won me the star prize. I have a gift of reading people and reading their minds. If you’d recall, I was always behind other contenders. And throughout the period hostilities lasted, I never took the first position in any of our exercises. I was tactically managing to make the next assignment while preserving my energy for the D-day.
How did you feel when you found the treasure?
I was excited. I think it was destiny at play. Life is not all about how much effort you put into anything, instead its destiny and the will of God that prevails. If you are at the right place and at the right time, you will definitely have an encounter with destiny. When I found the hidden treasure, I said to myself, “Oh God, your word is true.”
You weren’t expected to win the prize?
If you have read any of my interviews, I categorically stated that I love to be underestimated. That’s my strength. I love proving people wrong. In the jungle, I knew what I was doing. I was focused and determined to be the last man standing.
Who was the first person you called after you’d found the hidden treasure?
My wife. To God be the glory was the exclamation.
With N7.5million prize money cooling in your bank account, how do you intend to spend the money?
I have invested part of that money into my private school, St. Nicholas Secondary school located at Magodo Estate. I ensured that the money went into acquiring more equipment to boost learning in my school. I bought new sets of computers, air-conditioners and laboratory equipment
I also put some of it into my hotel business. One of the hotels located at Ayibo area of Lagos will be completed before the end of this year and the other at Ogudu, is still under construction.
Are you still laying claim to the presidency of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, (AGN)?
I’ve decided not to join issues with anybody at the moment. I don’t see the need for me to operate at the same level with other claimants because they lack knowledge and understanding. If there’s justice in this country, I will get it.
The so-called members of the board of trustees of the guild know this much, but they have chosen to toy with the destiny of the guild.
I don’t recognise their so-called government of national unity. I wonder if members of the board have ever taken time to really study the constitution they are parading everywhere.
A lot of crimes have been committed against this guild because they are not carrying our members along. I wouldn’t have known all of these, if I’d not been invited into this mess. It is one of their mistakes.
Initially, I was on their side until I realised how much we have been cheated and deceived by them. I had to withdraw my support. Our children’s children need to benefit from this industry.
Segun Arinze is not my problem but the board of trustees whose tenure expired in 2008.
The board has undermined the growth of the actors’ body and I promise them that, as long as I live, I will see to the end of this matter. They will be hearing from me soon.
GENEVIEVE, OMOTOLA REUNITE IN ‘IJE’
Genny The well scripted movie, Ije, according to information, has reunited the two sworn-enemies in the movie as they both buried the hatchet and beautifully played the roles they were paid to do. We learnt that the multi-million movie also features top Nollywood actors. If you recall, these two screen goddesses once watched their dirty linens outside over supremacy. While Gene, as the mother of one, Genevieve is called, is busy working to step up her game in the industry, Omo Sexy, as Omotola is fondly called, is not left behind in pursuing a good course in the industry. The battle of supremacy between the two was one of the factors that led them, individually, to enter a studio to try out something different from movie. Though, there musical efforts were highly castigated due to their low performance in reeling out what the people want as they have exhibited in the movie world, notwithstanding, they still remain one of the sultry actresses in Nollywood today who make the industry tick. We shall tell you more as event unfolds. Omo Sexy |
LEPA SHANDY’S MARRIAGE CRUMBLES
Lepa Shandy
This tenacious Osun State born movie idol who was discovered by Bayowa’s Gbenga Adewusi, though, not without checking out what she’s got beneath her thighs, is said to have separated from her about five year old marriage to Mr. Kazeem , a Lagos based businessman.
A source who whispered this to our eardrum recently said Shade, from the look of things, has joined the league of Nollywood actress whose marriages have collapsed and also that she has already packed out of her matrimonial home.
If information at our disposal as regards what led to the crash in her marriage is anything to go by then we shall tell you more about it as soon as we gather other details.

Illegal BREASTS
How market?
Haven’t you heard that the Lagos State Government has banned hawking in public places? Despite the law, you never even bothered to do it within suburbs like Ajegunle, Badia or Okokomiko. We were notified that you were caught in a highbrow area, because you complained of bad market. For flagrantly flouting the law you have been fined N900, 000.
Flaunting what?
Girlfriend, why waste taxpayers money? We can hardly see the cleavage you are flaunting. Infact we had to call a lab technician to bring in a magnifying glass. Why expose those unripe agbalumo (cherry) to harsh weather conditions? Although your lawyer argued that the pair needed sunlight to blossom, but that is unacceptable in this court and you are fined N700, 000.
|
.
• |
Wrong signal
We were told that despite rain and sunshine, those heavy masts on your chest were unnecessarily exposed. All evidence shows that the masts were sending wrong signals to all the men at functions. It got so bad that the networks were clashing. With all authority vested on this court, you are sentenced to go to Benin city where you would be mandated to clear all busy mast areas.
SNAKEY
We almost mistook you for a snake girl out of an Indian film. Or were you in the House of Reps when our lawmaking sumo wrestlers and their Jackie Chan- trained opponents assaulted the sensibilities of all Nigerians? That only explains why your skirt looks so creased . Jokes apart, we know it’s a design, but it doesn’t suit you. You will be granted bail on the condition that you bring in two members of the progressives as sureties and you pay
the sum of N500, 000.
• |
STYLE OR FAUX?
Is this a new trend or something? You actually wore three belts at the same time? But since we don’t have enough evidence to prosecute you, we hereby adjourn this case till the 30th of August for the next hearing. Meanwhile, you are to remain in our custody, so you won’t tamper with the evidence on ground.
• |
Expose
You were caught on the wrong side of the law when you flouted Section 89, Subsection 12a of the 1990 Style Constitution. You are showing your bare legs and at the same time you are revealing your cleavage. You have been found guilty and sentenced to three months at Kirikiri Medium Prisons.
I rise!
Dagrin to Release 3rd Album
Fans of the late rap king DAGRIN would be thrilled that his third album may be released soon.
According to report, finishing touches are being put to his latest effort by his management to release a compilation of his unfinished works post-humourously.
The late rapper's Manager Tunde Peters, under Edlyne Records who is presently in the States with Late Dagrin's Label mate-DJ ZEEZ taking some time off, has said that the late Akogun may have been buried but his works will keep his dreams & hopes alive.
The album which we learnt is to be titled 'D INVISIBLE BULLET PROOF" will feature hits like "IF I DIE" & other great joints.
Off the Record with Kate Henshaw-Nuttal
Modest, pretty and friendly, Kate Henshaw-Nuttall is one actress who made a great debut into Nollywood. She became an instant celebrity when she starred as ‘Omono’ in a major Nollywood movie titled ‘When the Sun sets’. Kate auditioned for that movie in 1993 and would have given up before getting the chance to partake in the auditions; however, fate was a step ahead of her. According to her, hungry and tired, waiting to be auditioned, she decided to go get a drink and then leave when Reginald Ebere, a popular director and producer who was also a member of the panel stopped her from leaving. Her appearance in When the Sun Sets marked a turning point in her life.
Since her first appearance in the Nigerian movie scene about 17 years ago, Kate who graduated as a Medical Microbiologist from the University of Lagos has also starred in over 40 movies, soaps and plays. In 2008, she went international when she acted alongside other Nigerian artistes including few actors from Hollywood in a movie titled ‘Close Enemies’. The movie was premiered at the Pan African Film festival in Los Angeles.
Also in 2008, she won the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role for the film ‘Stronger than Pain’. She is presently the Brand Ambassador for Onga seasoning and the Golden Link for the National Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme.
Kate is one talented actress every good director would want to work with and recently she added another feather to her cap when she was invited to star in the much celebrated ‘The Vagina Monologues’, an award winning play by Eve Ensler. In her characteristic homely and unpretentious way, Kate lets us in on how she got to the top in her chosen profession. Excerpts:
OFF THE RECORD: Can you recall your first audition and who encouraged you to go for it?
KATE: My first audition was about 17 years ago. It was late J.T Tom west who invited me for the audition. Before I met him, I started out modeling; I shot my first TV commercial for Shield Deodorant in 1990, which was on television. I have also done ushering jobs in programmes and events. I have shot musical videos; I shot some with Segun and J.T. Tom West. That was how I met J.T. and he invited me for an audition somewhere at mile-2, very close to mile-2 bus-stop. The audition had been going on for 2 days and I was there on the second day and there were a lot of people, people in soaps like Ripples and Mega Fortunes; those whose faces were already known.
And I said to myself, “Let me just try”. The audition was for a role in a film and we waited for hours, I was hungry and tired and I was going to go and have a drink and go. And just as I was about to leave, one of the people in the panel, Reginald Ebere who is also a director and producer came down and was chatting with J.T. When he saw me, he said “Who is that girl over there? Let her come up”. I said no, that I was tired and he said, “Come up! Give me 5 minutes, I’ll call you in”. So that was how it happened. From there on we were cut down to 10 or 20, I think, five then two and I almost lost the job for the lead role because I was not a known face, people didn’t know me. As opposed to the other lady whose face was known. But at the end of the day, the director Ifeanyi Anyafulu made the decision to use me for the lead role and that was it.
OTR: You’ve come a long way in the movie industry, how have you have been able to manage your success and also keep a low profile?
K: I was brought up in a very reasonable and comfortable family, my parents made us very grounded especially me, and I’m the first. I was the only girl until years later after the last boy that my sister was born. I have two brothers and a sister. So, I grew up doing all the house chores, grinding the pepper, going to the market with my mother, sweeping, ironing… I hardly watched TV because my mom would knock my head and made sure I was in the kitchen. So that kind of upbringing of, don’t be lazy or if you have money, you have to be able to manage yourself. There was a word my dad always used, ‘Frugal’ and I had to go and check it up in the dictionary. It means being wise with money you have, no matter how much or how little, you must learn to be frugal. And even while I was making money for myself I learnt to save and plan for the future; you know that kept me well-grounded and my mum is a very strong woman, she works hard , up till toady, she washes her own pots, cleans her own things herself.
I’m very down to earth and haven been in the industry for this long, I’ve seen people come and go, I see people who started with all the noise, then suddenly they fizzled out, we didn’t hear anything of them. Even to make a come back is very hard. So through a lot of experience, watching other people, I’ve learned that the best thing to do is to keep a low head and continue to maintain the standard for good things, well bad things come too. But there will come a time when you’ll only be associated with those things that make you bad. And of course, God as been very instrumental in my life and I believe I will not here if he wasn’t with me. I wouldn’t have made it this far without him. It’s is not easy. I am a very down to earth person; I don’t let money or anything get into my head.
OTR: How far do you plan to go as an actress, seeing that you’ve already gone as far as Hollywood?
K: I just keep doing projects here and there. I am very much involved with women, women’s right you know, anything that has to do with liberating the woman from whatever oppression, be it financial, physical, emotional, mental kind of oppression. I relate with as many charities as possible. Do a lot of work. I have bits and pieces of projects that are coming up, that I’m thinking of branching out into. Acting is always my first love but the roles are not that many anymore. One reason is that they cannot afford me anymore because when they see me, ambassador for this, ambassador for that, they think this one her money will be too much. Like I said, I’m working on a project with another colleague of mine. It’s our own programme.
OTR: Have you ever thought of directing or producing your own movies?
K: Yes. Mostly producing or co-producing my own programmes and my own shows. I don’t want to give out so many details now but it is something that used to be a part of the soap ‘Candlelight’
OTR: I would love you to tell us about your work with the V-Monologues.
K: The Vagina Monologue is usually done the world over by famous actresses and it is usually done in the month of March, which is the month of women and also Mothers Day. We bring to the fore issues affecting women, things that they go through, be it tradition, religion, personal experiences with their spouse or fellow woman, interactions; generally women are put down in every society all over the world not just here in Nigeria.
Four years ago I was invited by aunty Joke (Joke Jacobs) to be a part of the cast. I was really scared I won’t lie when they said it was a monologue, I’d never done anything like that before where it’s one person who does all the talking and asking and then gets reactions from the audience not like 2 or more people. I told aunty Joke that I couldn’t do it but she said I could and it was something I could put in my resume that you’ve done and you go anywhere in the world and I say I’ve done the V-Monologues, I’ll be appreciated. Two years ago it was adapted to fit the Nigerian setting, so it was now the V-Monologues Nigerian Version where we adapted issues from all over the world be from the north, south, east, west what women go through in form of tradition, religion, when you were young or getting old, your interactions with other females, males, any sort of oppression, or liberation for women. (The V-Monologues held Sundays between 7th and 28 of March, 2010 in Lagos).
OTR: How has the Vagina Monologues affected your life as a person and as an actress?
K: At the second time I had to do it, this was the first time we did the Nigerian version, that was when I came in contact with ‘Project Alert for Violence against Women and Children’, and after all the show and performances, I had to go and meet the woman there and asked her what her society was all about, she told me and I told her they were doing a good work. And something just prompted me to call her up one day and I asked where her office was. I told her I was coming to visit her. Funny enough, it rained that day but I still made it there and she was surprised. When I got there I saw women who had come for one problem or the other. Project Alert has been running for 10 years now, they offer legal aid, counseling, shelter and everything for anyone who has run away from a tough situation or needs help. They offer every area of support for a woman going through whatever she is going through in her home. They really opened my eyes to see what women were going through and I made sure I gave them my full support.
When I became the Brand Ambassador for Onga seasoning, I spoke with them and the M.D was very pleasant enough to support Project Alert at their 10th year anniversary. Also when they went further to say they would offer employment to the women who found themselves in a situation where they could no longer stay in an abusive relationship or stay in a place where they were not safe and they needed work, as long as they were qualified, they would give them a chance. That was a very big step which I was very happy about because you find out that most women, apart from the physical and emotional aspect, they don’t have financial empowerment, they can’t take care of themselves and their children when the need arises and they make do with whatever the find, there is nothing they can do about it. When you see them on the streets, you will be surprised that they come from good homes maybe they can’t go back to their parents and their friends so they roam the streets with their children. It’s really that bad. Vagina Monologue did that for me and my journey with Project Alert started then.
OTR: How many charities do you work with?
K: I am also the Golden Link for the National Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme (NCCPP), another thing that has to do with women. Cervical Cancer kills many women these days because women don’t bother to go for checkups, especially for those who live very busy lives and it doesn’t take more than ten minutes to get yourself checked and know your status
OTR: The dress you wore for AMAA 2008 was auctioned for £2,000. What was the money used for?
K: (Laughs). Part of the money went to Project Alert I gave them a check. There was a day they presented a book, a law book where they had cases that had been in court, which they presented to the police. The other half of the money went to another upcoming organization called Rave and Style… I think. It was City People who organized a party for me and asked me if I would like to auction the dress. It’s a good feeling to be able to do something, especially giving back to the society; you know what will you leave behind or what would you love to be known for.
OTR: Do you think celebrities take advantage of charity for publicity and advancing their career?
K: Hmmm…Let me put it this way, like any company, you’re supposed to have a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and I feel for every celebrity you should be able to do something. Okay, you’ve done your film, you’ve sold your CDs, musical videos, what else are you doing? How are you affecting lives apart from entertaining them; are you touching them in a personal way apart from getting them to buy and laugh or dance to your CD? What lasting memories will they have about you?
I feel all celebrities should be involved in one charity or the other, doing something; it could be their own personal programmes touching lives, identifying with a cause, helping people. I’m not one for using your status as a celebrity to further your career; you have to be actively involved in it, adding some sort of value.
OTR: If you were a scriptwriter, what kind of stories would you write? Would you centre on any particular theme?
K: It definitely has to do with women, I know a lot of women who are out of their homes, divorced and can’t take good care of their children, even young girls who are being abused by their fathers. Basically everything that has to do with women is what I want to do.
OTR: So how would you describe yourself?
K: I am a very hardworking, down to earth, faithful, very disciplined when it comes to my work and I do not condone lateness.
OTR: How often do you cook?
K: At home on weekends. But definitely when am on holidays with my husband I have to cook.
OTR: Another Honeymoon?
K: (laughs) Not really a honeymoon, because I do most of the chores myself. There are no helps when we go for holidays, so I have to wash and clean, but at least it’s just the three of us.
OTR: Earlier you talked about your father using the word frugal a lot while you were growing up. What is the most expensive thing you
ever paid for?
K: I think the most expensive thing I ever bought is my car which I got last year, If anyone ever told me that I was going to get such an expensive car I wouldn’t have believed but God made it possible.
