Banky W: ‘Wizkid Was Never Arrested in Scotland For Drug Trafficking’

The rumour spread fast that young singer Wizkid had been arrested in Scotland for trafficking drugs.

The young singer has had a fair share of controversy from his varying declaration of his age, alleged relationship with actress Tonto Dikeh, break up with the lead girl in his video for ‘holla at your boy’ to having his car snatched.

EME Record Label executive and singer Banky W addressing the rumour via Twitter wrote: <‘@wizkidayo was="" performing="" in="" benin,="" not="" getting="" arrested="" scotland.="" he’s="" now="" hard="" at="" work,="" finishing="" his="" album,="" dealing="" drugs.<="" b=""> #TheEnd‘ just after he wrote: ‘I’m going to say this one more time for the record..’ The young singer then retweeted his mentor’s tweet. <‘@wizkidayo>

Alasari: The Untold Story

As the remains of Emmanuel Ishola Durojaiye a.k.a. Alasari were laid to rest on Wednesday, 23 March. Durojaiye was stiil undergoing treatment at a private hospital before the accident that claimed his life occurred.

It was further gathered that the popular actor, who was being treated by a physiotherapist, acquired the Nissan Armada car that he travelled in about two months ago.

Unknown to some of his friends and associates, Alasari, who was living in his Ita Elega, Abeokuta home with only one wife, had three others and one of them is nursing a two-month old baby.

The late Durojaiye, who became popular with his role in Iroko Oluwere, was also running a popular programme on Ogun State-owned Gateway Television.

The programme, according to our source, is entitled Ida Ofin and it borders on human rights abuse, among other ethical issues.

Apart from these revelations, he was also said to be planning the release of two movies, Iyanu (Part 2) and Omo Night Club.

We also gathered that the late Alasari had a series of stories which he was planning to put into movies as the television programme afforded him opportunity of getting stories from various sources.

The burial of Alasari, who died at the age of 49, attracted thousands of people, including students, colleagues in the movie industry, friends and fans. One of the prominent people at the burial is the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, governorship candidate in Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

As soon as the hearse conveying his body was spotted, residents, students and other sympathisers trooped to the streets to catch a glimpse of the casket conveying the remains of their idol to his final resting place.

The casket, however, was not opened, as against the request of the officiating minister, because the crowd was surging forward to catch a glimpse of the body. So, that aspect of the programme was cancelled to avoid pandemonium.

Abuja Lover delivers baby girl for 9ice

Its a baby girl for singer 9ice and his Abuja-based partner Bukky!

Although the pair would prefer to keep it hush hush, we can reliably tell you that they are taking their relationship a step further with the arrival, early last week, of their first baby together.

Sources close to 9ice tell us the singer -whos separated from his wife Toni Payne has been a regular visitor to Abuja, since Bukky a fair-complexioned older woman took in last year.

The relationship has never been public, even though those close to the singer are well aware theyre seriously dating.

We cannot tell for now, if the pair is planning to get married; especially as 9ice and Payne are still legally married.

Multiple sources tell us this lady is the reason the singer has been a regular visitor to Abuja; and that his ex Toni Payne is unhappily- aware of the relationship. In fact almost all the ladies close to him know of her. She herself even went out of her way to contact them, our source offers.

Sources say Bukkys baby, a girl, was delivered on Monday March 21. The baby is 9ices second. His first son named Zion was delivered on Thursday December 4, 2008, at Presbytarian Hospital, Southern California, United States of America.

I can tell you for sure that 9ice has gotten the girl pregnant, and she has put to bed. Toni knows. But even her is keeping quiet but itll be a source of embarrassment for her, one of 9ices close friends tells us. He does not want to be named.

I cant tell if hell marry her or not. But shes very close to him and I believe theyre serious. He disclosed.

9ices manager Dehinde Fajana through a telephone conversation, Fajana claimed that he is ignorant of the situation and questioned the existence of his boss Abuja partner.

Is there any partner there? Does 9ice have any partner in Abuja? Im sorry, I dont know Fajana responded.

9ice did not immediately respond to our enquiries.

BREAKING NEWS: Fire Guts Venue Of City People Awards This Evening. Politicans and Celebrities Scamper for Satety

Reports coming in say that fire has just gutted the Balmoral Hall, venue of City People Awards just as the event was going on this evening. Tuface Idibia, Genevieve Nnaji, Sen. Florence Ita Giwa and many politicians were at the venue when the fire started...

Something close to what one will call an explosion occurred some minutes ago at the Balmoral Event center in Oregun. We gathered on good authority that the talk of the town event centre had been reduced to ashes as a result of a fire out break.

Before the inferno, we gathered the event centre was filed to the brim with politicians, celebrities and government officials among whom included he likes of Sen Florence Ita-giwa, Senators of the federal republic, 2face Idibia, Genevieve Nnaji, Yaw of Wasobia FM, Alariwo of Africa, Segun Obe and many more.

We understand that the purpose of the gathering was for the 14th City People Awards for Excellence organized by City People Group, publishers of City People magazine. As at the time of filing this report no casualty was recorded. Some of eyewitnesses we spoke to said “ the fire was definitely deliberate”. Some said it was politically motivated because it started immediately an award was presented to some Lagos state government officials; and that as soon the hall was filled with the shout “ACN Democracy forever”, the fire started.

While some other people who bared their minds said the fire or "bomb" may have been planted by rivals of the event centre as A-list events are gradually been stage there nowadays and therefore spoiling business for the event centres in the neighborhood. However this goes, let us thank God that no life was lost in the inferno as it would have been another national disaster. We want to be sure that the government will look into the matter and a clearer picture of what really caused the inferno will be made public asap.

FRANK EDOHO BREAKUP-LATEST JIST

Wife moves out of home over inability to pay rent.

Sells off Lexus Jeep to make ends meet.

Contrary to his public posture, sources have reaffirmed that celebrated presenter of must watch television programme, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Mr Frank Edoho has indeed abandoned his family.

And not only this, fresh information has it that he has also stopped providing for his broadcaster wife, Kathrine and their three children.

He is said to have adopted this stance for close to a year now.

Information at our disposal revealed that Edoho had carefully masked the development from the public based on the after effect it might have on his job.

The promoters of his claim to fame, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire had warned him about any negativity about his person rubbing off their show.

He is widely seen as the face of the show all over town. It was their insistence that made him recalled his wife in the initial celebrated bust up that the couple later denied. There were talks of replacing him as presenter of the show before he bowed to the demand of the promoters of the show.

His present action of moving out of his matrimonial home and stopping all allowances due to the family for about a year is said to have started taking it’s toll on the wife and their three children.

Kathrine is said to have sold off the Lexus jeep her husband bought for her over inability to maintain it and part of efforts to make ends meet towards the end of last year.

In other to keep up appearances, she was said to have opted for another Jeep- though of lesser grade- identified as a Pathfinder.

She is said to have survived all these while on support from close knit family and friends in the know and her earnings as an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority.

But these efforts are evidently barely able to sustain her and the children.

Recent development has it that Kathrine has moved out of the home abandoned by Edoho over inability to continue paying the house rent.

The house located inside Chevron estate is said to go for around 3-4 million Naira per annum.

Unconfirmed sources described her new location as on ‘Abraham Adesanya’.

Further investigation revealed that as marriage break up generates increased public awareness by the concerned parties have started wading into the matter to patch things up before irreversible factors make the change in the marriage permanent.

Edoho, now living in a new apartment is said to be resisting the move- while maintaining public stand of just an everyday disagreement in the marriage.

The immediate reasons that resulted in the current state of the marital union are yet to be established.

Is Eedris Abdulkareem living on past glory?

This was the question on the lips of some Ilorin residents, who came in their thousands to witness the Glo Rock n Rule concert, which was held at the ancient city penultimate weekend.

Eedris was well received when he sauntered on stage for his performance, as he went on his knees to recite Suratul Fathia, a popular Muslim prayer. Mr Lecturer, as he is fondly called, actually held the crowd spellbound, as he took them down memory lane with performances of some of his old hit tracks.

The crowd was yelling for more and Eedris maintained the tempo, as he did a solo performance to Shakomo, Sade and other hit songs that popularised ‘Remedies’, the defunct hip-hop group that was made up of himself, Eddy Montana and Tony Tetuila. Surprisingly, while some people actually commended his swagger on stage, many condemned Eedris solo performance to ‘Remedies’ hit songs. Besides, his performance of Calabar Girl, his new song, which featured Kenny Ogungbe, and saw almost all Kennis Music artistes on stage, attracted more jeers than cheers. Although it was not altogether a bad outing for Eedris Abdulkareem, the Ilorin fans expected fresh vibes from the Jagajaga crooner

Oluchi’s hot pose sends tongues wagging

The list of Nigerian icons cannot be complete without the name Oluchi Oweagba. The mother of one, who is just making a return to the runway, became the face of Africa at the age of 16. Since then Oluchi has become one of the most sought-after models in the world and she has graced the cover of many international magazines like Nylon, Marie Claire, Allure, Vogue, and ELLE among many others. Oluchi was the face of campaigns for Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Gianfranco Ferré, Gap, and the like.

Her runway experience has been with John Galliano, Christian Dior, Shiatzy Chen, Chanel, and Giorgio Armani among others. What a wholesome achievement for the wife of Italian fashion designer, Luca Orlandi. But not many think the recent pictures, which announced her return to the modeling world after maternity leave, are wholesome. While many do not see anything wrong with the pictures, some bad mouths are calling them “indecent.” “What is the big deal if Oluchi decides to bare it all in the course of her profession?” asks a professional photographer. With what Oluchi stands for, is there anything wrong with this pose?

It’s God that will forgive Eddy Remedy for saying I’m a lesbian – Essence

Though she’s been around for a long time, Delta State-born Uwale Okoro, also known as Essence, is yet to hit the A-list. The Facebook Lover crooner, in this interview with ’NONYE BEN-NWANKWO, talks about her life and career

Do you really think your latest album, Essential, is doing well in the market?

Well, I see it everywhere. I make it a point of duty to ask about it. I do one-on-one marketing to augment what the label is doing. I was in Warri recently and I saw the album as well. We thank God. We’re still expecting to do better.

In monetary terms, will you say the album is a success?

By God’s grace, this year has been good. God has been faithful. When others are saying there is a casting down, you will say there is a lifting up. I have been lifted up and I’m very grateful.

Is there anything in the pipeline?

We’re planning a reloaded album. I will have Facebook Lover remixed. It is going to be hot. I’m not going to compare it with the original track. It is going to stand on its own. It is going to be another song. We have so many songs to push and we’re going to push them.

A lot of people believe that the song wouldn’t have been a hit if not for Jaywon that you featured in it…

Really? Well, I stole some of Jaywon’s fans, if that is what they want to hear. His fans have become my fans. But seriously, I taught Jaywon to sing. When I was told to do a song with Jaywon, I told him that he would do the song like me. I told him he could do R and B and he actually did it. It brought out a unique side and style of Jaywon.

You are one of the oldest surviving artistes under Kennis Music. How come you are still there when some others have gone?

Where are the others who have come and gone now? Have they survived? I feel comfortable working under a family-like atmosphere. When you are in a family, there is no way you will be thrown out. Apart being an artiste, I’m also a human being who understands that somebody is taking his time and trouble to do what he is doing for the artiste. Baba Keke (Ogungbe) has a family. He has children. But for the love of the industry, he is sticking his neck out. And staying there has helped me as a person. Sooner or later, I might be in a situation where I can be of help to others. The seed of oneness that I have cultivated by being where I’m now will follow me when I get to that point.

But will it be right to say that you have remained with Kennis because you don’t have an alternative?

Being in this industry thus far has made me see a lot of things. I have seen a whole lot of people come and go. Some people come from abroad and promise you this and that if you join their label. I don’t want to be caught in that. A whole lot of artistes have been caught in that web and they are stuck. It has spoiled a lot of relationships. For me, relationships endure more than silver and gold. Money is a spirit. It goes round.

What kind of contract do you really have with Kennis? Won’t it expire?

I was Kenny St. Brown’s backup singer. I got signed on officially in 2004.

That has been a long time still…

I renewed my contract.

You begged them to renew your contract.

We sat down and talked about it. We decided on what to do. I had to be ready to work harder and churn out good songs. Then we signed the contract.

You are really among the known female artistes in the country but you are yet to be rated among the top in the industry, why?

It is a female problem. You can ask any female artiste. If you look at the line up for shows, you will only see one or two female artistes. I don’t know why it is like that. Maybe they feel we need too much pampering. I don’t know the reason. I’m trying to work towards that. In a situation we come together and showcase whatever it is that we have, then, they will begin to take us seriously. There is a limit to what we can do. There are some stunts we dare not pull as females. They believe that we don’t have songs that can rock the crowd. But we are churning out songs. We may have been resting on our oars and do love songs.

So, you don’t get invited to shows at all?

It is not as if we don’t do any. It is just that we don’t get to do the big concert shows. But we still do gigs, parties and AGMs (Annual General Meetings). They don’t call the guys for that. But we really need to connect with the diehard fans, the ones that go out to buy our CDs.

But don’t you think you would have made it if you had been into rap music like the Sashas, Mo Cheddahs and the Kels of this world?

But I don’t rap! I won’t do what I don’t know how to do! We know our talents and we stick with it. Most of the rappers don’t sing. I will not just come out and start rapping. For what? It is not my talent. I have fans who have followed my career for this period of time and I am not sure they will be there is I switch to rap.

Do you still sing the National Anthem?

I have not sung it in recent times. I have not done it this year. I was supposed to sing it at an award ceremony recently, but the organisers wanted me to do it alongside somebody who I hadn’t practiced it with. With due respect, I had to decline.

Do you still get royalties for the Super Story theme song you did?

It is not all about money. It is about relationship and I have a good relationship with Chief (Wale) Adenuga of Super Story. He is a nice man. He has been there for me. I easily ‘obtain’ from him.

Are there times you feel like quitting this industry, especially when the money is not rolling in?

Of course; there are some down times in everybody’s life. It has never really been about the money as I said earlier, it is about the passion. I love music and I eat and drink music. Only a handful of people get to understand you. You really would like to impact on a whole lot more. It becomes frustrating. Thank God for passion, friends and fans. When those times come, you will still see somebody that will come up to you and tell you he loves what you are doing.

Since you are the only one that sings in your family, do you have your parents’ support?

My cousins don’t get to understand me at times. I’m from a very conservative home. But they have come to realise that I won’t taint their name. Don’t forget that I pay my bills. I’m not asking anybody for money. My mum loves music my dad can’t sing to save his life, but he loves music. They are very supportive.

How do you cope with the scandals?

They affect me in the sense that they affect my family. It hurts them that I’m giving out so much yet people talk trash. Do they know that what they say affects my family? Is there no respect for family anymore? But that is the prize we have to pay. I know who I am. The truth will come out. We’re managing.

Have your forgiven Eddy Remedy for saying that you are KSB’s lesbian partner?

I don’t have anything to say. It is God that will do the forgiving. I know who I am. I know the daughter of whom I am. I know who KSB is. She is a wonderful mother. That story is old school.

Do you still talk to Eddy?

I have not run into him. I’m in the studio most time or I’m at home or I’m at shows. I don’t see him at shows and I don’t see him in my house and I don’t see him in the studio. I have not seen him on the road.

Do you think you will talk to him when you see him?

Let us wait and see.

There was a time you were rated the number two single ladies in the music industry.

Really? I didn’t know about that. That means I’m relevant. There are a whole lot of single women that nobody is talking about. I’m not going to get married because somebody said I should. I don’t intend to get married and jump out of the marriage. I intend to go in and stay.

So when are you getting married?

Soon.

But we have been hearing ‘soon’ for a long time now…

I can’t marry myself. A lot of people are rushing in and stumbling out. You will be sceptical about it. I know some people have fantastic marriages. This is not a race. It is not how fast or how soon.

Are you in any relationship?

Yes I am.

With who?

With a man.

Doesn’t he have a name?

I can only tell you that he is calm. I’m not giving you a name.

Is he going to marry you?

I hope so. I have not seen a ring yet, so I can’t start bragging.

Is he comfortable with your career?

My man is comfortable with it. That is the reason I like to keep my private life private. He knows who I am. Most of the time they say I am here or there, I’m with him. It is hilarious.

Goldie seems to be getting the most attention in your label now.

Goldie is a pop singer and I do R and B. We don’t do the same thing. Everybody has his time to shine in this industry. I have been in the industry for like ten years. I have my crowd and she has her crowd. If it is your time, what will I do? I can only support you so that you will also support me when my time comes as well. We all support each other.

How come you are not glamorous like most other singers?

I’m not flashy. I’m a trained theatre artiste. When I’m on the stage I’m a different persona. I’m telling a story. I can’t look ordinary on stage. Who will I pose for at home? They know who I am. I’m very simple.

You don’t even drive a posh car.

In these days of kidnapping? Hell no! I will not put a target on myself so that people will not come and kidnap me. I will buy a nice decent clean car. I don’t want anybody to kidnap me and tell my poor father to bring N250m.

Are you fulfilled?

I’m not complaining. A true artiste will never say they are fulfilled. Even Michael Jackson wasn’t fulfilled. He still had so much inside of him. But I’m grateful for where I am. I know more will still come.

Alec Godwin in new romance

Alec Godwin, the estranged hubby of Branama crooner, Kefee, has got his groove back after the messy divorce that had the couple saying nasty things about each other.

On his Facebook wall, the music producer changed his marital status from ‘single’ to ‘in a relationship.’

This attracted a lot of comments from friends and fans who wished him well and advised him to ensure this new relationship worked out well.

When Life and Beat called him on the phone to inquire about his latest relationship, he chose to be evasive.

However, Godwin, who said the matter was ‘undercover,’ added he wasn’t ready to reveal anything till the right time.

When asked if the new babe was a singer, Godwin said, “She sings though. I didn’t want that, but that is the way love goes.” But will the wedding bells ring soon? “By the grace of God. That is the idea. I just have to take my time for the right person,” he says.

Apart from the new joy in his heart, Godwin is feeling good about the new artiste signed under his label.

Sound the alarm! D’Banj in yawa

How did Kokomaster D’Banj, in a blink, translate from an indulgentlyadored music superstar to a vilified object of our scorn and mock-ful caricature?. He interviewed President Goodluck Jonathan on Silverbird Television last Thursday, March 17, that’s how. Someone says ‘But, it is not the first time D’Banj has openly associated with President Jonathan, why the public outcry?’. D’Banj-haters argue the entertainer’s decision was ill-advised and his timing for a youth-advocacy role, premature.

The international court of youths in the cyber- community have passed a social pariah verdict on D’Banj; honestly they have the collective power to do so. The over 7.5 million Nigerians on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Skype, Linkedin, etcetera etcetera etcetera (à la The King and I), have created a cyber-communication network to voice agitations and disenchantments with every national topic. Toss in the Blackberry messenger service which, presumably, all BB users have activated on their phones and the virtual community has never been more rabidly outspoken. Anyone or anything can become trending topic in cyberspace; there are no untouchables or undoables. On the Internet and BBm, young upwardly mobile Nigerians flayed the Don-Jazzy protégé and multi-award winning artiste for his first journalistic mis-adventure —interviewing the President to hear his agenda for Nigerian youths. Some of the online comments went like this: ‘Why does he think he is speaking for millions of Nigerian youths?; It is the highest form of insult youths have received recently’. ‘Who bestowed upon him the mantle of representation?’.

‘Which media leaders of thought did he consult to draw up questions to ask Mr. President?’. ‘Imagine, we are the ones who made him who he is today and he is going out there to misrepresent us?’. ‘Does he know what it means to go through a Nigerian University for 4+ years and come out without a job (ouch! that was below the belt)?’. ‘An over-ambitious young man whose only obsession is to sing about sexuality with meaningless cacophonic sounds’. ‘Doesn’t he know that Nigerian youths have come to love entertainment just to forget their sorrows?’. We will let D’Banj know that he betrayed our generation!! ‘Let D’Banj release a new album and we will leave it to waste in Alaba’!!. Another theatrical BBm broadcast I received goes:

#IamD’banj: Presido to bahd!, what are your plans for us in the entertainment industry?

#DonGEJ: File! Kokomaster, you’re sitting down on a long thing! I’ve sent a supplementary budget to the National Assembly to sponsor your collabo with Kanye West. Daily, the online tirade has continued with quirky humour. Which tells me that the befuddled kokomaster has put his foot right in it and would need maverick mop-up experts to repair his battered public image. On the other hand, D’banj could choose to respond to the public’s jabber like Omotola Ekeinde did —silence, ignore our opinionated rantings. Silence has been seen to work several times as media interest and public commentary fizzle out after a while. Hating D’banj presently does not mean we should throw away the baby with the bath water. The harmonica-player is, no doubt, one of the most outstanding musical exports from Nigeria in this generation. He is of the same music star mold of the Tufaces, Nnekas, Psquares and almost as hot as Asa is internationally.

The trendsetting ambassador of Nigerian pop culture, is an achieving product of this environment as non-stimulating and unfulfilling as it has become. It is indeed an indictment on many of us young people who may even be better-talented, but are wasting our abilities on the premise that government has a responsibility to spoonfeed us. If anyone knows D’banj’s history, they will know he had a hard time breaking through as a music artiste. More so in school where he battled to get through tertiary institution while struggling to find himself as a singer. It is unfair to throw his not graduating from school in his face. In his defence, D’banj joins the college dropouts hall of fame which already has other extremely influential people: Winston Churchill —ex-British Prime Minister; Roman Abramovich —billionaire owner of Chelsea FC; Julian Assange — Wikileaks; Steve Jobs —Apple (iMac, iPad, iPod) and Pixar; Julie Andrews —renowned Hollywood actor and Bill Gates —Microsoft, to mention a few. Likewise, I think D’banj’s kind of music satisfies the basic needs of man as one of the commentators above ironically mentioned. His songs are light, easy to listen to, melodious, infused with the party-spirit and funny.

In this age of 24-hour blackouts, mad road traffics, academic strikes, increasing environmental pollution, unending bills etc, I don’t need any heavy, depressing music to drive me to the brink of suicidal-despair. When we needed a Fela of his generation and his time, God gave us one and now we need a D’banj of this generation and time, we have him (interesting that Fela is one of D’banj’s greatest musical influences). Let’s stop deluding ourselves that if we boycott D‘banj’s album it would make a huge difference. How many of us actually buy those genuine studio productions? I speak for myself because I have NEVER bought a D’banj album in my life, but I have also not RIPPED his songs off a borrowed CD. The top-flight design labels wearing D’banj cannot own and maintain state-of-the-art cars and expensive properties in choice locations around the world on N150 (street price of his CD) x 100,000; assuming 100,000 people do go out to buy his album. The bulk of his wealth comes from endorsements, concert appearances and brand association. Let me use the newspaper industry as an illustration. We have over 14 million people in Lagos, according to the state-conducted census. Out of these, I assume one million (modest estimate) are literate. Meanwhile, newspapers houses collectively print out between 350,000 - 400,000 copies per day for nationwide distribution and not every one of them are sold. So, do you think the thriving newspaper houses in Nigeria depend on 400,000 copies of papers to generate revenue to fund such a huge capital intensive project that a newspaper publication is? No. This world is lived in a symbiotic partnership for those who utilise it well.

In the newspaper industry, we understand that every reader who brings out his widow’s mite to buy a paper made a decision that must be respected. So we break our backs to bring you the best of news, information, education and entertainment; ours is to provide this service at a qualitative and most affordable value. In music, the same applies. D’banj works tirelessly to produce music that would entertain and help people ‘forget their sorrows’. He sings of challenges with which many young people can relate to and his songs are motivational, if you like, telling you to believe you can succeed. That he has interviewed Mr. President is no earth-shaking event worth crucifying him for. My poser is this, tomorrow it could be you who’s given the opportunity to. How would you utilise that privilege to be a worthy spokesperson for you generation? I think we should even start now by asking what you are doing to be a role-model for your generation. On the wisdom, merits and demerits of Mr. President opting to talk shop with Mr. Endowed in a televised interview rather that chest up to fellow presidential hopefuls in a debate, I tactfully draw a blank.

I’ve never met my father–Ramsey Nouah

Ramsey Nouah is one of the leading actors in Nollywood and has been in the industry for more than two decades. He shares with ADA ONYEMA how he started his career, marriage and sundry issues

You have been in the industry for the past two decades; does it not call for celebration?

Well, I didn’t do a major celebration because basically I didn’t want the attraction in the sense that I didn’t want to create any buzz around it.

How was it when you started?

It wasn’t a feasible industry in Nigeria then; we were only shooting soap operas on national television. The end of 1993 came with home videos when Kenneth Nnebue shot Living in Bondage and it was successful. By 1994, everybody was thinking of going into home video and being one of the popular faces already on TV then, it was easy for me.

Did your parents really approve your going into the movie industry?

My mum is a very liberal woman. I became very independent even at a tender age and she gave me a free hand. She was not really concerned about TV or anything. Parents were not comfortable with certain characters you play in a movie and parents are more concerned when it’s a female than when it’s a male. For me, she didn’t really mind, though in the beginning she was saying something like, ‘What do you think you are doing?’ But as time went by, she just knew that she couldn’t stop me and she just let it go. Today, she is very happy.

And your dad?

My dad has never been around; I didn’t even get to know him.

I don’t understand.

I mean my father was never around during my growing up days and I didn’t get to know him.

Up till now?

Yes, even up till now.

Is he dead or..?

I wouldn’t know.

But they said that a when a male child grows up, he will surely look for his dad. How come at this your age you still don’t know your dad?

I’m a father too; so why would I be scouting for a man that wasn’t there throughout my growing up days as a boy; why would I want to? I’m there for my children and if a father was not there for me why should I go looking for him.

How was growing up like without a father?

My mum was tough and is still tough; I can boast and hit my chest that she groomed me. I tasted both sides of the coin while I was growing up. I tasted bitter life and sweet life and it helped me in my career as an actor; the ability to be versatile and play different roles because I have seen the gutter and I have seen the grace.

What is your worth as one the pioneers of Nollywood?

I can’t possibly give you a figure into what my worth is but one thing is sure, you can’t place a figure on the work of art. It could cost nothing and it could cost a trillion naira.

Many people jump into entertainment because it is one of the fastest ways to be famous. What is it for you?

Indeed, but you to have to have the inward ability to be an artiste. The fact that you know that acting or singing is a quick way to fame does not mean that you can be an artiste without knowing how to draw a picture. In the beginning, I came into the industry not for the fame but for the money. I needed money for my GCE exams and other things. Back then, you know there was no job for secondary school leavers, so I thought If I did one acting, I could just get the money to pay for my WASCE and GCE. But long before then I knew I have a very strong passion for being an actor. Right now, it is not about the money again, it is about leaving a legacy behind because I have been in the industry for long; I have been appreciated and loved by the people. When I’m gone I still want my name to resound in the ears of those that are yet to come so that they will know that one of those who actually made the industry what it is today is Ramsey Nouah.

How did you develop the skills of interpreting roles?

God has a purpose for everybody in this world and once you deal with it purposefully you will definitely achieve. If you are a shoemaker, or a pepper seller, as long as you have a passion for it, it becomes big in the process. I think it is more of being inborn than being an ability.

You recently acted a pastor in a movie; how did you come around it?

It has never been out of the ordinary but this one was different in the sense that people look at pastors as idols. The fact that everybody thinks that every pastor that stands on the pulpit and preaches the word of God usually frolics and messes around with women in the church, but this was different. Everyone thought because he is a fine pastor, who preaches the word perfectly well will be a woman kind of guy, but the twist came when he was not into women, he was into guys, a homosexual. I keep telling people that movie making is a reflection of what happens in the society. That portrays how the society frowns at such things. Inasmuch as the role gave me some goose pimples while I was doing it, I thank God I got through it somehow.

Why do you always play the role of a lover boy?

Like it or not it is not only in Nollywood, it happens all around the movie industry all over the world. Once you are known to perform a particular role properly, automatically you are knocked down and stereotyped to that character. But however when you look at Hollywood too, you realise that most of the actors are stereotyped. It is just the way the industry is, you have to look for a way to break free of that bond. Again, in all the movies around the world, there must be an affection between a man and a woman, even in a horror film. I don’t know if I can actually remove myself from being a lover boy.

And in real life too?

To be honest with you, it really affects me in real life. If I do any other thing than what they expect me to be, they are like I’m acting it but there is nothing I can do about it.

You separated from your wife sometime ago; have you made up?

That is one of the bad press I have had in this industry. There was nothing like that and it was so bad because it was targeted at your family, trying to destroy your family. I have grown a thick skin but my wife was really hurt; she didn’t like it.

How does she feel seeing you acting those romantic scenes?

Honestly she is human; she doesn’t like it. No woman would probably enjoy that kind of stuff. But she understands that is the way it is, moreover this is the jet age. She knows that whether we like it or not the profession brings food to the table; besides that, she has known me with the profession for so long, so she comes to understand how it works and sometimes she jokes about the romantic scenes.

How did you meet her?

We were together in primary school. She is intelligent and always used as a point of reference back then. After that we went our different ways and met when she was graduating and we started it off. She is a very homely woman, what you may refer to as wife material.

So, men can easily identify a wife material?

Yes, you can tell. The woman is the owner of the house. If the house is destroyed, it is her fault because God has given her the power to endure and tolerate. Men can be very annoying in so many of our moves, but automatically a woman is created with emotions, love that should contain the children, husband and everybody in the home. A mother’s place can never be misplaced in the house.

Don’t you think your romantic roles can affect your children?

My kids haven’t started watching my movies that much yet. They are getting used to the fact that their father is a popular figure; they haven’t seen the potential of their father.

How do you reconcile the Ramsey on screen and real life?

It is simple: I just make sure I give my best. On the set, I’m a very professional person. I just make sure I do my thing to the letter. When I’m home, I’m a father, a mother, a family man. It is all about discipline.

Any embarrassing moment?

I have been embarrassed a few times. Someone has actually stoned me with pure water because of my role in a movie. Another person threw the orange she was sucking at me because I was a mean guy in a movie. As a matter of fact, someone has actually spat on me and I was real hurt to my bones.

You seem to attract lots of attention everywhere; how does that feel?

You don’t want to walk a mile in my shoes; it is not easy. Some people love the razzmatazz and accolades that come along with this industry but honestly I don’t enjoy it. I have had my fair share of being a popular face, people shouting and barking at me. I don’t have any privacy and I can’t possibly have a good life with my family anymore. Sometimes I want to go out with my kids after not being with them for so long; I go to a public place where I want to share with my children and the moment I want to spend with them people are saying, ‘Oh Ramsey, my children want to take a photograph with you’ and that but I have my kids there, the time I want to spend with them I can’t spend it with them just for being a popular face. I wear a face cap and all that to conceal my identity but it doesn’t work for me. It makes me very unhappy sometimes.

What’s your comparison of Nollywood then and now?

Nollywood in the beginning was going towards being a good industry, but somewhere along the line, we lost it because of sycophants. In the beginning we used to actually do rehearsals before we got on set, follow the ethics of movie making, but right now, it is all about money making, it is no longer about the professional ethics of production. As a result, the industry collapsed by virtue of that, today there is a boomerang effect. Today, they are not making their money back, no good production effect anymore. My problem is, it is not only known faces that can sell your movie; if you get fantastic actors who are new, good publicity and you do the production well, you will still sell your movie. This is my argument; you don’t need Ramsey Nouah all the time on the front page of your poster so that you can sell when you have done a shoddy production. It has affected the industry drastically and many of them are coming to terms that we really need to follow the ethics of movie making properly.

When you are not acting, what do you do?

I try to be a family man by being there for the kids that don’t get to see me very often. If I have the opportunity for a little relaxation, I would rather swim or play squash for health purposes.

What is your definition of style?

As far as I’m concerned, style is simplicity in sophistication.

What is the most prized fashion item in your wardrobe?

My watch; I’m a watch collector; I love wrist watches.

Which schools did you attend?

I went to Atara Primary School. It was one of the schools which at that time enjoyed free education established by (the late Obafemi) Awolowo. I went to another free secondary school, Community Grammar School and ended up doing a diploma in the University of Lagos and now I’m running a course in business administration in the US.

D’BANJ: The thin line between love andhate

Once upon a time, Dapo ‘D’banj’ Oyebanjo, was
the musical sweetheart of many and poster-boy of
the Nigerian hip hop music industry. Youthful and
good looking with a finely chiseled body,
energetic on and off stage, he gifted Nigerians a
string of commercially successful albums that
earned him a place among the pantheon of
contemporary music stars in a short while.
With the production wizardry of Don Jazzy, he
could croak into the microphone and almost so
effortlessly sell millions of copies, nick multi-million
naira endorsement deals and performance
engagements from the east to the west and
everywhere around the globe. This is despite that
his music thrives on sloganeering and ephemeral
lyrics. But like the saying goes, who God has
blessed no man can curse. The past five years
have been D ’banj’s and it does not beggar
understanding that his musical odyssey is the
stuff fantasies are made of.
He started the first quarter of 2011 as a
transformational, pioneering figure in the industry
when the video of Mr. Endowed remix featuring
Snoop Dogg was released. The video put paid to
every doubt that D ’banj featured the iconic
American rapper on his song. Hardly had the
euphoria of this international collaboration
subsided than it emerged that Grammy awards
winning rapper, Kanye West, wanted a piece of
the D ’banj mojo. West actually tweeted at he and
Don Jazzy to hurry over to New York City because
there was work to be done.
And they responded immediately. Thus earning
the Mo ’hits guys widespread reverence. In truth,
every musician worth his salt would have given a
limb to be in the shoes of the Mo ’hits guys even if
for just a day. Hitherto, he was the high water
mark by which other artistes were measured.

The misstep?
Sadly, D’banj is ending the same quarter of just
three months as a punch line. Last Thursday,
March 17, the singer crossed the line between
appealing and appalling as the choice interviewer
of President Goodluck Jonathan in an interview
packaged by Silverbird Television. He was seen as
the perfect medium through which the president
could reach the youth. That never happened.
Rather, he wedged a distance between himself
and his touch-point. The contention, among
many others, is that for an artiste of his repute
who has interacted with the media even more
than his interview subject perhaps, he posted an
abysmal performance. He spent more time
fidgeting and nodding in acquiescence to his own
questions and ended up disappointing the
teeming youths he was to help the president win
over in the April polls. Not only was he severely
panned for his unintelligible interviewing skills
that saw him asking just three questions in an
interview of about 30 minutes, he did not ask a
single follow up question despite several
opportunities to do so.
D’banj was perceived as having frittered away a
golden chance to passionately express the
disenchantment of Nigerian youths to the
president

.
The thin line between
love and hate
Indeed, there is a thin line between love and hate
while the line between fame and infamy is
thinner. D ’banj has joined a growing list of
celebrities riding the crest of popularity and
seeming infallibility until a misdemeanor, a
misstep brings them back to reality. In just
30minutes, all the myth around him evaporated
and the sad part is that everyone now perceives
him as just a shallow and smug artiste.
The youth’s anger at D’banj’s inept handling of
the interview literally set blogosphere on fire even
before it ended and thereafter with many virtually
calling for his head. Inadvertently, he became the
sacrificial lamb of the president ’s refusal to
participate in the presidential debate organised
by satellite television channel, NN24. It was so
bad that the invectives could make a faint-
hearted artiste consider a career detour.
According to a well syndicated, anonymous
message, “D’banj speaking for Nigerian youths is
the highest form of insult we have received
recently. Does he know what it means to go
through a Nigerian university for four years plus
and come out without getting a job ?” The
questions over his suitability for the role and
conclusions were as scathing as they were
hilarious. Funnily, too, his name was caricaturized
as D ’banjiing, translated as “The dogmatic act of
nodding one’s head idiotically and stupidly in an
attempt to overshadow the disconnection to the
topic being discussed. ” He was also seen in a
photograph labeled ‘scapegoat’ with the reins in
the President’s hand. Another photograph also
appeared on Facebook where D’banj was dancing
with a topless lady while being castigated as a
misfit and unworthy role model.
Now, there is a groundswell of threat to boycott
everything about brand D ’banj with an
anonymous group opening a twitter page to
make this effective. Incidentally, the interview
took place about two days after his Kokomobile
phones hit the market. Not a few Nigerians have
pilloried the phone saying it is inferior and
nothing compared to the cheapest phones in the
market. This probably wouldn’t have been the
case two weeks back
.
The reality
Apparently, brand D’banj is in trouble. He
certainly needs a reboot. However, D’banj did not
set out to falter or be demystified. No discerning
individual would have rejected the opportunity
and honour to confer with the president of his
country irrespective of political or religious or
ethnic affiliation.
D’banj was just in the right place at the wrong
time and he pandered too gullibly to his puppet
masters ’ whims. Perhaps a more intuitive and
better informed individual would have fathomed
that he was being choreographed to fail, but he
was probably too carried away to reason logically.
As crushed and battered as his image and ego
have become, D ’banj should count himself lucky
that he is a Nigerian where the people forgive and
forget easily. He will bounce back

NADIA BUARI DROPPED FROM US BASED PR FIRM - JMG MEDIA RELATIONS

According to information that has just reached www.ameboofentertainment.com, Ghanaian actress, Nadia Buari has been dropped by her US based PR firm, JMG MEDIA RELATIONS.

A few weeks ago, new stories emerged online claiming that the Actress, Nadia Buari lied about the gown she wore to the Pan African Film Festival in February. The Press release issued by the PR Firm credited Oscar De La Renta as the designer. It turned out that Oscar De La Renta denied ever making the Dress.

Why did Nadia Buari have to tell a lie to her her PR? Why do African Celebrities feel the need to credit International designers to boost their image? What happened to wearing the native Kente or Ankara Prints?

Even though the Letter from JMG MEDIA RELATIONS does not state a reason why they are withdrawing their Media Representation for the sexy screen goddess, for anyone has followed stories about Nadia Buari recently, the answer will not be far-fetched.This is very shameful and we hope other Celebrities are taking note.

D'Banj interviews president Goodluck Jonathan

D'Banj interviewed President Goodluck Jonathan today. The interview will air on Silverbird TV at 8:30pm today 18th March, 2011. Watch out for it.

How is it that the President of the Federal Republic doesn't want to be interviewed by journalists but doesn't mind sitting down for an entertainer? What exactly is D'banj going to ask him? He will probably kiss-ass throughout the interview (D'banj is one of the many Naija entertainers campaigning for the president). Now a Chude Jideonwo or a Tolu Ogunlesi, or the guys from 'What About Us' would have done a better job.

I don't know what to make of PDP anymore. Please Vote, but think well before you do!

His influence on the group’s kind of music was phenomenal as his trademark singing style made them instant fan favourites.

But it was the 1994 classic West Coast anthem with Warren G ‘Regulate‘, that saw Nate Dogg’s career blossom as he went on to be an essential ingredient to making anyWest Coast hit. Nate soon became a priceless commodity in the music scene as any song he graced with his laid back West Coast style became a notable hit. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Presenter, Frank Edoho's Marriage Collapses Again!

..moves out of matrimonial home for t.v. gal, Katherine.

The marriage of Frank Edoho, the hugely popular presenter of must watch programme, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, to Katherine, his Nigeria Television Authority employee wife is once again in crisis.

This is barely two years after the couple’s celebrated bust up that was hurriedly patched up with the intervention of notable family friends and influential personalities at their work place.

Investigations conducted revealed that the current situation has reached such a level that Mr Edoho has moved out of his matrimonial home.

He is said to have discreetly secured another apartment in Victoria Garden city while his wife hold forth at the couple’s abode in Lekki, Lagos.

Their three children currently reside with the wife.

Sources disclosed that Edoho abandoned home over what he labelled ‘life threatening behaviour’ of his wife, Katherine.

It is not clear at present what he meant by this appellation of his wife’s conducts.

Information at the disposal, attributes the immediate cause of the present turmoil enveloping the Edoho’s marriage to a mysterious abandonment of home by Katherine in the heat of a marital squabble.

She was said to have disappeared and remained incommunicado from her husband for four days.

She allegedly took the children with her in the mysterious journey.

Sources divulged a highly distraught Frank Edoho later learnt on the fourth day of her disappearance that she was abroad with the children!

He was said to have moved out of their matrimonial home before she returned and later secured another apartment for himself.

Efforts to make him return home to his wife are said to be meeting stiff opposition from the popular television presenter.

He is said to be insisting a wife he left at home for work, only to disappear for four days and surface in another continent is capable of doing anything to him!

The reason(s) Catherine behaved in the manner she did is not clear at press time.

It is however instructive to note that their celebrated bust up of not too long ago was as a result of wife battering allegations against Frank Edoho.

He was said to have beaten up his wife to a state of grave injury over what was later confirmed suspicion of infidelity.

The action had resulted in Katherine moving out of her matrimonial home and a breakup of the marriage- until intervention from notable family friends and influential employers.

However with Frank now moving out of the home for his wife and children -and gone ahead to secure a new home for himself, there are strong indications that the centre might not hold again in the Frank and Katherine Edoho marital union.

Investigations are still on to get a clearer picture of the crisis that is speedily collapsing the marriage by the day.

Timaya Sponsors Empress Njamah’s Cousin

it has been over a year since former lovebirds – Singer Timaya and Nollywood actress Empress Njamah went their separate ways.

Despite the bitter breakup and endless war of words, the best-selling singer-performer is not relenting in pushing Njamah’s cousin who was living in Empress’ home before moving in with Timaya at his Marwa Gardens residence in Lagos. Not even the abrupt end of Timaya’s relationship with Ms Njamah stopped him from opening his cheque-book to sign her cousin Recoba to his ‘Dem Mama Soldiers’ crew.
