Bombings-Campuses are next target-CP
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo has stated that intelligent report made to known to the police that campuses are next target for bombings but security men have been alerted to monitor activities. He said this at an annual seminar organised by the security unit of the University of Lagos, themed, Harmonizing the Micro and Macro Security Management to ensure Peace and order in the Nigeria University Campuses, which was held at Afe Babalola Hall of the institution recently.
Marvel Akpoyibo, while delivering a topic on 'Reducing crime to the lowest ebb in Lagos State: our mission, our task' said that the bombings are food for thought and have become extremely worrisome. He recalled how criminal activities were of the highest in the 90's but with the collective responsibility of students and security forces, peace was maintained and UNILAG was the only school that avoided being shut down.
Speaking further on security issue, Marvel Akpoyibo mentioned that it is the duty of government to ensure the safety of lives and property but the citizens must also police their home, children because it is a collective responsibility. He said, "If there is no security in the campus, students will be afraid to leave their hostel to go to the lecture room."
Reacting to the trigger happy policemen, Akpoyibo spelled it out that they treat them as 'common criminal'. He also divulged his security tips to the audience which has led to two years free bank robbery in Lagos State. This he said got the attention of Inspector General of Police of Ghana who pleaded passionately to Akpoyibo to share some of his security tips with Ghana policemen for some hours.
Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, Chairman of Academic Staff Union of University, Unilag Chapter, told our reporter that the programme is a nice and commendable programme. Commenting on the security in Unilag, he said that it's not truly that bad. "In Unilag, there is petty stealing and the highest crime is stealing of cars, books and Gsm", said Karo.
The seminar also attracted academic dons in the institution and Lagos State Government Official among who are Professor R.A. Bello, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management); Mr. Oluwarotimi Sodimu, Registrar; Major (Rtd) Alexanda Panox, Special adviser on security to Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola and a host of others.
