Isaac Newton: Prediction of the end of the world
One of the greatest mathematicians in the world, Isaac Newton, predicted the end of the world would occur after the year 2000. He made this calculation in the 1670's--nearly 350 years ago! Some researchers have concluded that he accepted the time frame of the year 2011 to 2060 as being the time in which Yeshua (Jesus) would return. Please note that the usual calculation of 2060-(7x7)= 2011 also fits in this time interval. Below are some questions and answers concerning this prediction. How important was biblical prophecy for Newton?

Extremely important. For Newton, biblical prophecy forecast the divinely-ordained events of the future. He believed the interpretation of biblical prophecy was "no matter of indifferency but a duty of the greatest moment". Prophecy allowed Newton to see history in advance. It also identified an evil, apostate system (Babylon) that pure Christians must flee to avoid destruction and the wrath of God.

How does biblical prophecy work for Newton?

Newton believed both in God and that the Bible was a revelation from God. He also believed that God was not bound by time as are humans, allowing Him to see the "end from the beginning". Thus, to use Newton's own words, he was convinced that "the holy Prophecies" of the Scripture are nothing else than "histories of things to come". At the same time, biblical prophecy is written in highly symbolic language that requires skilled interpretation. Newton rose to this challenge as he attempted to discover the future of the world in the words of the prophets.

Why did Newton only rarely add up the prophetic numbers?

Because he was wary of prophetic date-setting. Newton was worried that the failure of fallible human predictions based on divine prophecy would bring the Bible into disrepute. Ironically, in one of the two times Newton wrote down the 2060 date, he railed against date-setters. Newton may have been aghast if he had known his prediction would be broadcast around the world in the twenty-first century. His calculations about the time interval from 2011 to 2060 were private musings made on a scrap of paper not meant for the public. Ironically, the media coverage of the 2011 date has made Newton look like a date-setter.

The logic of Newton's apocalyptic calculations

Newton, like many historicist prophetic commentators of his age, believed that the prophetic time periods 1260, 1290, 1335 and 2300 days actually represent 1260, 1290, 1335 and 2300 years using the "day-for-a-year principle".

For Newton these time periods (especially the 1260 years) represent the time span of the apostasy of the Church (for Newton this means the Trinitarian Church, chiefly the Catholics). Thus, he looked in history for the likely date when the apostasy formally began (one sign of this for him was the date when the papal church obtained temporal power). From there it was a simple matter of adding the time period to the beginning date. However, things are rarely so simple with Newton. As already mentioned, Newton looked askance at "date-setting", and for this reason he rarely wrote out the end date for a time period once he had settled on a beginning date. The year 2011 is also significant because in addition to the rarity of end dates in Newton's writings, the calculation giving the 2011-2060 time frame comes from fairly late in his life and is asserted with uncharacteristic vigour.

Finding the commencement date was of great importance to Newton, since once he added the prophetic time periods to this date, he was able to determine when the great apocalyptic events of the end of the world were going to occur.

Although Newton believed there would be wars and cataclysms around the time of the end, for him this period was also the storm before the calm. Newton's prophetic faith therefore has a positive element.

The prophetic time periods

The time period 1260 days appears in Daniel 7:25 (as "a time and times and the dividing of time" [=a year, two years and a half year]), Daniel 12:7 (as "a time, times, and an half" [=a year, two years and a half year]), Revelation 11:3 (1260 days), Revelation 12:6 (1260 days) and Revelation 13:5 (42 months)
The time period 1290 days appears in Daniel 12:11.
The time period 1335 days appears in Daniel 12:12.
The time period 2300 days occurs in Daniel 8:14.

How did Newton arrive at the time frame 2011 to 2060?

This did not involve the use of anything as complicated as calculus, which he invented, but rather simple arithmetic that could be performed by a child. Beginning in the 1670s and continuing to the end of his life in 1727, Newton considered several commencement dates for the formal institution of the apostate, imperial Church. Earlier commencement dates include 607 and 609 A.D. As Newton grew older, he pushed the time of the end further and further into the future. Newton twice gives 800 A.D. for the beginning of "the Pope's supremacy". The year 800 is a significant one in history, as it is the year Charlemagne was crowned emperor of Rome in the west by Pope Leo III at St. Peter's in Rome. Since Newton believed that the 1260 years corresponded to the duration of the corruption of the Church, he added 1260 to 800 A.D. and arrived at the date 2060 for the "fall of Babylon" or cessation of the apostate Church. It seems that Newton believed the fall could perhaps begin somewhat before the end of the 1260-year period and continue for a short time afterward. Whatever the precise chronology, Newton believed that sometime shortly after the fall of the corrupt (Trinitarian, Catholic) Church, Christ would return . On page 144 of his Observations (1733), Newton cited Daniel 7:26-27 as evidence of this:

But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

So then the time times & half a time are 42 months or 1260 days or three years & an half, recconing twelve months to a yeare & 30 days to a month as was done in the Calendar of the primitive year. And the days of short lived Beasts being put for the years of lived [sic] kingdoms, the period of 1260 days, if dated from the complete conquest of the three kings A.C. 800, will end A.C. 2060. It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner. This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fancifull men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, & by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail. Christ comes as a thief in the night, & it is not for us to know the times & seasons wch God hath put into his own breast.

Comments: This excerpt demonstrates that Newton was not only reluctant to set dates, but that he was convinced the end would not come in his lifetime. He took seriously biblical passages that assert that no-one except God knows the time of the end. Nevertheless, this excerpt shows that even Newton was fascinated with the prophetic conundrum of the date for the return of Christ and the beginning of the Millennium. Finally, although Newton's statement was meant to demonstrate that the time of the end was several centuries away from his perspective, history has now caught up with his predictions, which helps explain the current interest in his apocalyptic calculations.

Why are his theological and prophetic beliefs important to our understanding of Newton?

Newton was not a "scientist" in the modem sense of that term. Instead, he was a "natural philosopher". Practised from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, natural philosophy included not only the study of nature, but also the study of God's hand at work in nature. Newton was committed to a notion of natural philosophy that saw the discovery of God and His attributes as its chief end. For this reason, any serious study of Newton's natural philosophy must include an understanding of his theological views. For example, Newton's famous concepts of absolute space and time were fundamentally based on his notion of God's omnipresence and eternal duration. It is also clear from his private manuscripts that Newton believed the ideal natural philosopher would also be a priest of nature. For Newton, there was no impermeable barrier between religion and what we now call science. Throughout his long life, Newton laboured to discover God's truth - whether in Nature or Scripture. Although he recognized disciplinary distinctions, Newton believed that truth was one. Thus, Newton's study of Nature and Scripture were in a certain sense two halves of a whole: the discovery of the mind of God.

The real question is: If the world
doesn't end, will the people who
are pushing this sort of prediction
chuck the whole concept or will
they go back to the drawing board and
come up with a new date for the end?

Dear John:

I will respond on several levels:

1) Because Bible students have carefully found the Bible's calendar, we are confident that the year 2011 is the end. Please note that Newton had the right idea but he did not have a calendar and thus could not know the exact year in which Jesus would return.

2) For the sake of argument, let's suppose it did not happen. Then nothing would change: Many people would find that there is a lot of money to be made in setting these sort of dates. Thus, this will continue. IMHO, this is what has happened in the past: Groups such as the Jehovah's Witnesses found that there could increase their membership and thus contributions by making end-time predicitions. Of course, in my case, I have spent a lot of money--I have not made a single dime from these warnings (and neither would I accept any money).

3) Although I am sure that the year 2011 is the end of the world, I am also sure that Camping would be finished at Family Radio if it failed to happen. Because about 75% of the employees at Family Radio are *not* true believers, they would turn the 40 stations (or so) into a "traditional" religious broadcast.

In any case, I would encourage you to pray for mercy and wait upon God in these last days. To God alone be all the Glory!

Dear Elijah,

I see no reason to accept the notions of Biblical prophecy, because there is not a single example of this sort of thing working.

I predict that world will go on as it has before after the critical days of 21 May and 21 October.

We can only hope that Camping will be finished. As you say there is quite an industry built up around apocalyptic predictions. Though I doubt it. That
kind of cat lands on its feet.

What concerns me is that people will actually believe in this stuff and will act accordingly, by engaging in self destructive behavior. Such behavior could be simply stopping normal activities, spending all of their money at the expense of their family members, or violence.

Such an apocalyptic mania is a kind of drug. Fortunately we do have a definite end date, but in this case, when the end date comes and goes, there is sufficient slop in this strategy of date setting that people cab gin up new dates, possibly forever.

WITCHES & WIZARDS OF NIGERIA WARN ATIKU

Witches and wizards in the country have advised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from presidential race or risk being humiliated at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) primaries. The National Co-ordinator, Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria (WITZAN), Dr Okhue Iboi, told Daily Sun in Lagos that Atiku would be disgraced during the PDP national congress.

He is just wasting his money, energy and resources. His campaign is in vain. His fate is already sealed. He is going nowhere. The era of his relevance in Nigerian politics is over. He should forget the idea of becoming Nigeria’s number one citizen, either now or in the future.

Mo’Cheddah: Set to take over the world

There is probably no better way to wrap up the year 2010 than the manner in which petite title rapper and music star, Mo Cheddah did. Talking about her career, the title, ‘fast rising star’ which many people apply to describe the sensational performer who is till in her teens is more than apt. But as far as many music buffs are concerned, even that is not good enough to sufficiently describe her anymore due to her massive accomplishments.

Not sure you would after taking stock of her numerous nominations in several awards in 2010 as well as victories in the Channel O Music Awards and of course, the biggest of them all, the MTV Africa Music Awards, popularly known as the MAMAs.

Speaking to Saturday Independent, shortly after clinching the MAMA award, Mo’Cheddah, originally named Modupe Oreoluwa Ola, said: “Once I got the information that I have been nominated for this category of the award, I was greatly excited, I was pretty overwhelmed and maybe the right thing to say even is that I was completely numb because I was not expecting it at all, at least not at this stage. I am usually very excited but when I heard that one, it was really a wow thing for me because I said to myself again and again, ‘this is for a MAMA award.’”

Although not one artiste to reduce herself to the level of not expecting to win the award on that shiny night at Eko Hotel and Suites, she knew it was always going to be tough call, a feeling that gave way once she was announced the winner of the Best New: Act category of the MTV awards.

“But whatever feeling I had at that time is not comparable with how I feel now that I have won the award. I feel so blessed and the other feelings I have cannot just be put into words right now. The best I can do when it comes to trying to pass it across is to tell you in simple words that I am really more than happy.”

For Mo Cheddah, already being called the new hottest female artiste in a long time, mainly as a result of her versatility in delivering very well in the area of rap as well as singing, has an album, Franchise Celebrity, it is not a rumour that the supreme being is her greatest confidence, after which she considers her dad as her biggest fan.

“God is the one that has been with me from the very beginning and all through, up till this point. God has opened doors that even I could never imagine. God has definitely blessed me beyond human reasoning and there is no way I can sum up what He has done and the importance of his favours and mercies up in one piece no matter how much time I have to do that.”

For a young lady who is just 19 and still an undergraduate in the University of Lagos, raking in millions and performing at the best shows, winning the MTV award on a day her heroes, 2face and P Square, her role models also won big, is a dream come true but she said everything is entirely down to hard work and belief and she is ready to reap the rewards all the way.

“I worked hard, I am still working very hard and of course we all know hard work always pays and because I know I worked hard, all I can say right now is that I am getting paid.”

It’s definitely been a fantastic year for the Franchise Celebrity, with multiple award nominations, two major African Awards (Channel O for Most Gifted Female and MTV for Best New Act), one Nigerian Entertainment Award (Most Promising Act), including performing for the president, Mo’Cheddah can only thank God all the way but she is insistent on conquering the music scene, both home and abroad.

“Now that I have won the MTV and I have this very special award in my collection, I consider it as a pace-setting accomplishment for me and I will just have to go from here and conquer the world as I go further. I am set to take over the world.”

Mo Cheddah has an edge in the fact that she can sing well and as well is a convincing rapper. The rap part of the package, she said, is something she got better at doing along the line but the leaning how to sing and the other rudiments is down to a member of the Kighthouse group but the whole essence is to be hooked on music.

“I just love music; music is something that drives me all the way and to any length. I am music and music is me; so every time in my mind, I am just thinking of let’s have as much as possible dosage of music in whatever for and so it is not something that is surprising to me that I can do these two well and I don’t really consider it an edge because it is just part of me to do the two.”

Although aware of this trend, it does not affect Modupe as far as she knows because working to rise and get to the top is her only recipe for success.

“Male domination is not something that bothers me and I would gladly tell any lady or girl like myself that is interested in music is to work very hard, believe extremely in God and what ever you do, never forget where you are coming from. Always set out your ambitions, your goals and do all you can all the time to follow it through. Don’t ever look back but you have to be aware that it is a very rough road but only your faith in God, determination to achieve something extraordinary and your dreams can take you there.”

Being a 400-level undergraduate of Theatre Arts in Unilag is one of the features of her life that delights Mo Cheddah obviously and instead of feeling bigger than fellow Akokaites, as Unilag students are called, like many celebrities like her, Mo Cheddah often speaks highly of her school and the fellow students, even when she is on stage or picking up awards. As May 29 inches nearer and political tension heightens with explosions rocking even the safest of places – like the Abacha Military Barracks, Abuja, celebs are beginning to take safety measures while going about their daily activities.

Perhaps after pondering on the Abuja New Year eve explosion for a few days, Imo state beauty, Rita Dominic has decided against traveling to Abuja by air citing the desperation of political powers as cause. The actress said on Wednesday that she’d rather drive.

“As elections get closer I will only be driving to Abuja. No flights for me cos some of these people are 2 desperate for power” — @ritaUdominic

Now don’t ask me if it’s safer to drive such long distance than to fly. Or if our Nollywood beauty can survive driving through our beautifully tarred inter-state roads.

By the way, who says she must drive herself? But even with a driver can Rita withstand the road bumps and sudden traffic deadlock situations? Uhmmm, I’m really thinking.

Well, I’ll agree with Rita to some point. Everyone knows that our public figures will not drive across states that have airports especially with their busy schedules.

Q. Your ex-husband Elumelu Mazagwu in a chat he had with a reporter precisely on the 1st of January 2011 accused you of many things; calling you names like a whore, slut, school drop out to mention but a few. Why do you think he is speaking now that it has been over three years that you guys separated?

A. My ex-husband is an angry man right now probably because we are no more together and again the marriage has been over since 2007. I believe he is supposed to have forgotten about me and moved on without me rather than calling me names. I don’t know why he is doing all these; probably he is jealous of my achievements. I was never any of those unprintable names that he called me. Firstly i will say he is the one that left me in Nigeria for 12 years while I was waiting to for my Green-Card to join him in the USA. There was even a time his parents came around and wanted to take my baby from me, saying this and that about not letting their son to marry me and stuff like that. I was nearly lost; no shoulder to lean on. It was at this time that i met a guy and we had a fling; the result was why he thinks our second child is not his. The DNA test conducted proved this but I never believed him.

Q. He also mentioned that he only wanted to help you by marrying you; that you were a whore, you sleep around with your landlord then and a one of his friend he named Goddy. How true are all these allegations?

A. I never dated my landlord or any of his friends. The landlord he was talking about, I told him all that transpired between us. At that time we I had our first child, the landlord bought me some stuffs for my baby and my ex was aware of this. The landlord knew I was married and that my husband was in the US; so how will I allowed such a man to take advantage of me. I was faithful to him all along. Because of this little problem with my landlord, he gave me a quit notice which made me embark on our first building project which I built in Akute, a suburb between Lagos and Ogun state. I never dated a landlord, his friends; it is all lie only hoping to tarnish my image and give me a bad name.

Q. What about the two hundred thousand naira he left before leaving for the US and the several other funds he sent through Western Union transfer from time to time for the upkeep of yourself and the baby; are you saying there is no truth in all these?

A. The issue of the two hundred thousand naira he left, I can’t even remember if the money was up to two hundred thousand. At that time he left I was already about seven months pregnant and there was no place to stay; he lied that he got me an apartment. I was scouting with a friend named Esther I met at Okota. It was after this that he was able to raise the money for my accommodation and I was eight months two weeks pregnant at the time. So all the story of him painting himself as the good husband are all lie; you can imagine an almost due pregnant woman living in a three bedroom flat with no chair, baby material and all. This man’s story is like a whole script which I have written, that is why I don’t want to tell it all out so that some opportunist won’t go make money out of it. It was so hard for me then because my family even rejected me because he never paid my dowry or even took me to the altar so I was all alone. Even the western union issue he raised, he said he sent me money through Union bank using western union. Union bank only transact Money gram. So it is all lie. Yes, he sent me money quite alright but that was after I had suffered with my baby for close to two years. He thereafter sent maybe $100 in one month or two like that; is that enough to carter for a me and my baby with different bills here and there.

Q. Let me get one thing straight; were you guys ever married then and if yes when and where was it?

A. At first we were not; it was just like a student thing then man and girlfriend. He promised me he was going to take me to the US, that I shouldn’t write my final exams. I was young and naive then I had no choice but to agree to his sweet talks. And we did a court wedding here in Lagos and he went to my parents to pay the dowry after which we both travelled to the US in 2004 but we never did the white wedding.

Q. What about all these stories he said about you going to the US to seek child support and the many lies told about him in the US court which warranted the $300 he gives you per week?

A. We stayed as man and wife for over a year in the US then all of a sudden one evening he came with two policemen and started packing his things. He showed me no sign before he left for work in the morning; this was a man I was hoping he was gonna come home for dinner but what do I get? His sister was with him calling me names, saying I spent over seven years in Nigeria cheating on his brother and all. I was just surprised; I had no choice than to let it be. After that I was told he came to Nigeria and he sold the house “duplex” I built for him in Lagos. What is the honour in that; a house I built with my sweat. Although he sent me money but at the time I was already acting and modelling; so I made enough money that was invested into the building of this house. I was left with nothing in the US to take care of two kids that was why I had to ask for the child support. When he got back it, the case was already waiting for him. He was only able to pay for just three weeks before he started hearing false stories that I was a flirt back in Nigeria, that I had many friends and all. So he had to re-file the case and asked for a DNA test to prove if our second child was actually his. The day he dropped the sample I was not there; they just came up with a result and he started saying he has proved that our second child was never his. I am calling on him again if he wants another DNA which is not manipulated; I believe the DNA he talked about was only done to reduce the child support he pays for the upkeep of the children. Well I have said in the court that i no longer want his child support anymore.

Q. So where are your kids now, in Nigeria or in the US?

A. My kids are here with me in Nigeria now. I provide for their needs; I thank God they have never been disappointed. My first daughter is fifteen years old now; she is into showbiz and also a musician. I bought her a guitar, pay her studio session fee and everything she needs. They both know that their dad is a coward. What impression is he leaving for his childish? They are grown up now and know who the bad egg between us is.

ACTING AND MUSIC
Q. Can you tell us some of the movies that you have featured in so far and now?

A. I did Dangerous Sister with Genevieve and Dakora; I played the role of Susan. I did Living in Darkness with Mike Ezeronye and Ini Edo; I played the village mermaid (Jezebel). I also did 0End of the Game with Sandra Achums and Tony One week; I played the village girl Unoma. I was in Desperate Woman with Mama Gee and also a couple of other movies that I can not remember.

I can see that you have not really done badly as an actress. Now that you also sing; are you leaving Nollywood for singing or when did the music thing start?
I am still in Nollywood. Actually I have like six Nollywood movies that I featured in while in the States but they are not yet out. About the singing part; I will say that it started like a dream. I saw myself singing in a dream after which I came up with the song “ Somebody help me” and before you know it, I become a musician and spreading all over the place.

Q. The music industry is no doubt a competitive market; what genre of music would you say you play and do you think Nigerians are ready for your kind of music?

A. Honestly I will say that they are ready because if you look at some of my tracks, I give varieties. I have gospel songs on it, tracks like Ikebe Na Money is also good. I have a whole lot that any body can choose from. My kind of music is Afro dancehall music.

Q. How soon are you dropping your album?

A. It is going to be very soon. They have been calling me from the US telling me to come back and all. Now I am back and working really hard in the studio. I will come out real hard with the best I promise them.

Q. Are you looking at doing any collaboration with any known artiste?
A. Yes I will do some collabos with artistes like Felix Duke and Timaya. But my first album is already complete; so the collabo will be in my second album which I am already in the studio for.

Q. How were you able to combine reggae, dancehall, gospel and your native dialect in your song?

A. I will say it is God because I don’t even know how it happened; the music just came flowing like that. The kind of music we do in the States is different from the ones here. And my producer is Asian; he is somehow related to Wyclef Jean. He always says that I should sing in my native dialect and no like a Beyonce or Rihanna because he says they were going to market me to the Caribbean, Hollywood and Africans. That was how I was able to blend the entire flavor in my music.

Q. Tell us about your background and how your growing up was like?

A. I am from Imo state in Ikedero. Growing up was not bad even though I wasn’t born with a silver spoon, I still managed to survive the hustle and bustle of the country. Before I left for the US, I went to college here in IMT Enugu; I did two courses Business Communication and Secretarial Administration and ended up with HND but wasn’t able to write my final papers due to one reason or the other. In the US, I am still in school studying Business Management. I will round up my studies soon.

Q. What do you think of the music industry in Nigeria now as compared to when you left in 2004?
A. I haven’t really had the opportunity of exploring what is going on here in the industry but from what I have seen so far; I think we are improving. Now you see our Nigerian artistes getting nominations in international awards like BET, MTV which has never happened before. We are doing good and improving.

Q. Have you ever been on stage performing in the States?

A. Yes I have done that a couple of times. I had a show with Majek Fasek in the US sometime ago. When Olu Maintain same to the US to launch his album, I opened the stage for him too.

Q. How was the feeling like; were you shy since it is different from acting which you are used to?

A. No I am never shy anytime I sing on stage. I won the stage and crowd anytime I am on stage performing. They love me and it is always an unforgettable experience. I am like a Tigress whenever I am on stage.

Q. There is this musical video of yours on the internet where you appeared almost nude; I think it is Ikebe Na Money video. Why did you show so much boobs knowing this is against African culture?

A. Yes I agree with you this is Africa. I wasn’t completely nude but my ass was and I was on top of a man winding my ass. I am an entertainer and I don’t see anything wrong in it; it’s all showbiz. Some people are against it while some of my fans like it. I don’t care whose axe is grind.

Q. Does it mean as an actress you can go nude in movies?

A. Yes I can go nude depending on what is involved; the money and person. It is all professional; acting nude is no big deal so far the price is right. This profession is make-belief that is one thing the public should know. I know most of our actress won’t be this blunt but I tell you they can do it. Na money we dey talk about here my brother.

What is your view about sex?

Sex is a natural thing; it has come to live with us. There is nothing we can do about it. It is a way of life.

Do you love sex?

My brother who no like sex. There is nothing bad in sex if it is done with someone you like.

Now that you are single again; who would you consider your idle man?

I wouldn’t actually know off hand but if I see my idle man I will recognize him. When I see those qualities in him, I will know it is him and I will go for him.

What message do you have for your fans?

Afro Candy is here to stay and have come to stay; she is the new generation artistes you all have been waiting for. Some of my fans have even tagged me African Lil’Kim. You better watch out for me. I am going to be showing a lot of skin in my musical videos which has never been done before in Nigeria. I love showbiz and if you like call me miss controversial, I like that. I love you all.

How Naeto C shattered table while performing

There is no doubt that Naeto C is full of life. The Kini Big Deal exponent is hyperactive on stage and he makes sure he carries his fans along each time he performs in an event.

His hyperactive nature, however, went awry while he was performing at a show in Lagos recently.

To cap it, music lovers are responding positively to his latest single, Ten Over Ten and Naeto C apparently enjoys seeing his fans sing and dance along to his vibes.

While doing the Ten Over Ten, Naeto C started jumping from one table to the other at the expense of the drinks, cups and cutleries therein.

He would do that for a few minutes until he would jump to another table. In the process of jumping up and down, a table broke into two.

The singer ignored the incident and continued with his performance. With each leg on the each half of the table, Naeto C continued with his performance.

The youths in the crowd admired this and danced along with him, and we observed that the older generation at the show didn’t find the act funny at all.

Uche Okafor, ex Eagle Commits Suicide!

Uche Okafor, former ace super eagles defender, USA world cup 94, Tunisia 94 cup winning squad, was found hung in his Dallas home today.

Uchenna Kizito Okafor, often shortened to Uche Okafor (8 August 1967 – 6 January 2011[1]) was a football defender who played 34 international matches for Nigeria.

Close friends say the former international showed no signs of depression and was in cheerful mood early in the week after speaking with some of his former team mates, including Nigeria coach Samson Siasia during the New Year celebrations.

His home has been cordoned off, as an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death are carried out by a US Coroner.

Final year university student who ingested 1.210kg of methamphetamine got arrested by NDLEA

Egboaka Onyeka, a final year student of Economics at Anambra state university was arrested by NDLEA at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, after he tested positive to drug ingestion test, during that hour, he was forced to excrete 68 wraps of the substance.



According to this suspect, he was promised $5,000 if he successfully took the drug to Malaysia. Curiously, he wrote a seminar paper entitled ”Effects of Drug Abuse in the Performance
of Tertiary Institution Students in Nigeria,” in his third year but its like that did not count on his part, it was all to gain marks.

A native of Orlu in Imo State, Egboaka said the protracted strike action by lecturers was responsible for his involvement in drug trafficking. He
said, ”I have been under pressure for a long time and my idleness as a
result of the strike provided the opportunity. In April 2009, I met a
man who wanted me to smuggle drugs but I refused. I told him that I will
think over it. When he called me after several weeks, I told him I
could not do it but he kept persuading me and at the end, i gave in for it and that was how i ended up here, he concluded.

Ritualists Pluck Out University Student Eyes

The family of Churchill Omoruyi, a 300-level student of the University of Benin, Edo State began the new year on a sad note when they received news of the death of their son, whose eyes were allegedly plucked out by ritualists.


P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that Churchill, a student of Department of International Relations and Diplomacy, University of Benin, UNIBEN, left home on 30 December, 2010 to attend a vigil at Christ Foundation Church, off Ewah Road, Benin City, but he never returned home.


The following day, Churchill brother, Paul Omoruyi, his father, Pa Omoruyi and his father brother, Mr. John Igbinadolor were shocked when police informed them that the deceased had drowned in Ikpoba River, Benin City when he was being baptised.


The family disputed the claim, saying that the late Churchill had been baptised before and he did not go to the church with a change of clothes in preparation for the baptism.


The family, therefore, went with the police to search for the corpse of the late Churchill. But when it was found on 1 January, 2011, the family discovered the deceased eyes had been plucked out and his tongue removed. This gave rise to their suspicion that he might have been a victim of ritual killers.


At the Esiegie Police Station, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mrs. Carol Onyeka Afegbai, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP confirmed the story.


She added that the late Churchill body has been sent to the hospital for autopsy and the result will determine the police next line of action.
Mrs. Afegbai confirmed the arrest of Pastor Ojo because the deceased was said to have attended his church for the vigil before his death.
The DPO directed further enquiries on the incident to the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Peter Ogboi, but he could not be reached as at press time.

Many diseases are silent killers because of the fact that they produce minimum or no symptoms in the early stages and are capable of causing death if not treated. And because of the lifestyle of most people in this part of the world, there has been an increase in the number of deaths caused by these killer diseases. Over thousand of lives have been lost recently to these deadly diseases. Most of the symptoms are always very mild at an early stage and as such, regular medical checkups and early diagnosis of unexplained or vague symptoms is very vital for women above 40. HEART DISEASES

Heart Disease is the No.1 silent killer diseases. It kills more people around the world than other diseases. Although men are more prone to heart disease than women, it is the most widely recognized cause of death in women. It is the biggest killer of women above 50 years old. Studies revealed that women sure have a very definable advantage over men in terms of heart diseases, but women over 50 years have the same risk of having a heart attack, stroke or any other coronary disease as men do. At this age, women have a greater risk of dying from it.

People who are at risk are those who have a family history of heart related diseases. Recognition of the problem often occurs too late and by the time most people realize that they are suffering from heart diseases,it would have escalated to an advanced stage that poses a treatment challenge for physicians. Often, the onset of the illness only comes to light when the patient has already been afflicted with a stroke or heart attack. Women will usually notice the following when there is an underlying heart disease: profound fatigue, difficulty breathing, feeling dizzy, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, pain or discomfort in the neck, shoulder blade or upper back and burning abdominal pain .

When a women has been diagnosed of a heart disease or having a heart attack, they are treated with a different medication from that of men. Research has proven that some anticoagulants work better for men than women. Both drug and surgery treatment protocols are designed for the elimination of heart problems and the restoration of proper heart function. The success of these developments is documented by the sharp decline of fatalities due to heart diseases.

BREAST CANCER

Breast Cancer is a malignant Cancer or tumor that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women.

Breast cancer affects one in 8 women, especially ones at child bearing age. Breast cancer kills more women than any form of cancer. It is the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 45 and 55.

No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a lot of risk factors which include: age, the chances of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older; genes, women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested; personal factors. Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after 35 e.t.c Some of the symptoms of breast cancer include: change in how the breast or nipple feels, a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area , nipple tenderness, a change in how the breast or nipple looks, a change in the size or shape of the breast, a nipple turned inward into the breast, the skin of the breast, areola, or nipple may be scaly, red, or swollen. It may have ridges or pitting so that it looks like the skin of an orange.

Early stages of breast cancer usually does not cause pain , that might explain why it so easy for it to do more damage before its been diagnosed. Early diagnosis plays a major role in its treatment. Treatment options for breast cancer may involve surgery (removal of the cancer alone or, in some cases, mastectomy), radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and/or chemotherapy.

OVARIAN CANCER

Ovarian Cancer is a Cancerous growth arising from an ovary (one of a pair of female reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, are formed). Most ovarian cancers are either ovarian epithelial carcinomas (cancer that begins in the cells on the surface of the ovary) or malignant germ cell tumors (cancer that begins in egg cells).

Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer in women and the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths in women. It frequently does not result in symptoms until the cancer has spread extensively. Less than one-third of ovarian cancers are detected before they have spread outside of the ovaries.

Possible early ovarian cancer symptoms include the following: Bloating, Pelvic or abdominal pain, Urgent or frequent urination, difficulty eating or feeling full very quickly. But, as the cancer grows, symptoms may include: Pressure or pain in the abdomen, pelvis, back, or legs, A swollen or bloated abdomen, Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation, or diarrhea, Feeling very tired all the time amongst others.
For treatment, most women have surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is rarely used. Cancer treatment can affect cancer cells in the pelvis, in the abdomen, or throughout the body

CERVICAL CANCER

Cervical Cancer is a Cancer that forms in tissues of the cervix (the organ connecting the uterus and vagina). It is usually a slow-growing cancer that may not have symptoms but can be detected with regular Pap tests (a procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and looked at under a microscope). Cervical cancer is almost always caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The virus cancer link works by triggering alterations in the cells of the cervix, resulting to the development of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia, which can lead to cancer. Women who have many sexual partners (or who have sex with men who had many other partners) stand a greater risk.Early stages of cervical cancers usually don't cause symptoms. When the cancer grows larger, women may notice one or more of these symptoms: abnormal vaginal bleeding, bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual periods, bleeding after sexual intercourse, douching, or a pelvic exam, menstrual periods that last longer and are heavier than before, bleeding after going through menopause, increased vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, pain during sex.

Doctors recommend that women help reduce their risk of cervical cancer by having regular Pap tests. A Pap test (sometimes called Pap smear or cervical smear) is a simple test used to look at cervical cells. Pap tests can find cervical cancer or abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer.

Finding and treating abnormal cells can prevent most cervical cancer.
Women with cervical cancer have many treatment options. The options are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of methods.

The choice of treatment depends mainly on the size of the tumor and whether the cancer has spread. The treatment choice may also depend on whether you would like to become pregnant in the future.

COLON CANCER

This is a Cancer that forms in the tissues of the colon (the longest part of the large intestine). Most colon cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. Even though this cancer kills more men, the rate at which it kills women has been on the rise lately. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer in females. Colon cancer is not contagious. Some people are more likely to develop colon cancer than others. Factors that increase a person's risk of colorectal cancer include high fat intake, a family history of colorectal cancer and polyps, the presence of polyps in the large intestine, and chronic ulcerative colitis.

Most colon cancers develop in colon polyps. Therefore, removing benign colon polyps can prevent colorectal cancer.
Symptoms of colon cancer are numerous and nonspecific. They include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, change in bowel habits, narrow stools, diarrhea or constipation, red or dark blood in stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, cramps, or bloating. Other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon), ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, and peptic ulcer disease can have symptoms that mimic colorectal cancer. Colon cancer can be present for several years before symptoms develop.

Surgery is the most common treatment for colon cancer. During surgery, the tumor, a small margin of the surrounding healthy bowel, and adjacent lymph nodes are removed.

FIBROID

Fibroid tumors are solid tumors which are made of fibrous tissue. These benign (non-cancerous) tumors are found in most cases, in the uterus of women in their 30's and 40's.

Most often fibroids occur as multiple tumor masses which are slow-growing and often cause no symptoms.
No one is sure why fibroid tumors develop, but some facts seem clear: fibroid tumors do not develop before the body begins producing estrogen during the onset of menstruation , fibroid tumors will continue to grow while estrogen is present, they will grow very quickly during pregnancy when the body is producing extra estrogen , the tumors often shrink and disappear after menopause when the body stops producing estrogen ,a woman will almost never develop fibroid tumors after menopause.

Although most fibroids cause no symptoms, the estimated 25 percent of women who do have symptoms may have abnormal bleeding, pain during menstruation, and as the fibroid tumors grow larger, women will often experience a swollen abdomen.

Larger fibroids may cause frequent urination or an inability to control your bladder, either the ability to control the urge or in severe cases, some women may find it difficult to urinate at all. If a fibroid extends towards a woman's back it may push on the bowels, causing constipation and a backache.

If the fibroid tumors are severe enough that they cause certain symptoms, surgery is often, the recommended treatment.
The sad fact is that because fibroids do grow back, most women will eventually have to face a hysterectomy. Removing the uterus is the only permanent way to effectively relieve most women of fibroids.

PELVIC INFLAMATORY DISEASE (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of the uterus lining, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. Most cases of pelvic inflammatory disease are caused by bacteria that move from the vagina or cervix into the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or pelvis.
The most common cause of PID is sexual contact without using a condom or other protection. This is called a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two bacteria that cause most cases of PID.

However, bacteria may also enter the body during some surgical or office procedures, such as: childbirth, endometrial biopsy, insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD), miscarriage, therapeutic or elective abortion .

The most common symptoms of PID include: fever (not always present; may come and go) ; pain or tenderness in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or sometimes the lower back ; vaginal discharge with abnormal color, texture, or smell ; bleeding after intercourse, chills, fatigue, frequent or painful urination, increased menstrual cramping , irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting , lack of appetite, nausea, with or without vomiting, no menstruation and painful sexual intercourse.

A number of different antibiotics may be used for treating this type of infection
Complicated cases that do not improve with antibiotics may need surgery.

ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is another silent killer disease of women. It is the growth of cells similar to those that form inside the uterus (endometrial cells), but in a location outside of the uterus. Endometrial cells are the same cells that are shed each month during menstruation. The cells of endometriosis attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants. These implants are most commonly found on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. They can also be found in the vagina, cervix, and bladder, although less commonly than other locations in the pelvis

Endometriosis affects women in their reproductive years. The exact prevalence of endometriosis is not known, since many women may have the condition and have no symptoms. It is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain and reasons for laparoscopic surgery and hysterectomy in this country. While most cases of endometriosis are diagnosed in women aged around 25-35 years, endometriosis has been reported in girls as young as 11 years of age. Delaying pregnancy until an older age is also believed to increase the risk of developing endometriosis.

And why a lot of women have lost their lives lately to this disease is the fact that it is often misdiagnosed as other diseases because of the bleeding factor which it shares in common with other terminal diseases.

Most women who have endometriosis, in fact, do not have symptoms. For those who do experience symptoms, the common symptoms are pain (usually pelvic) and infertility. Pelvic pain usually occurs during or just before menstruation and lessens after menstruation. Some women experience pain or cramping with intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination. Even pelvic examination by a doctor can be painful. The pain intensity can change from month to month, and vary greatly among women. Some women experience progressive worsening of symptoms, while others can have resolution of pain without treatment.

Other symptoms related to endometriosis include: lower abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, low back pain, irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding, or blood in the urine.

Endometriosis can be treated with medications and/or surgery

DIABETES

Diabetes is another silent killer that is rated as top killer.It has been responsible for a lot of death in women, even though the men are also not left out. The interesting thing about it is that almost one-third are not aware that they have it. Before you come to know that you are suffering from diabetes, this disease can result a lot of high blood pressure and damage the blood vessels. It is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Normally, the sugar you take in is digested and broken down to a simple sugar, known as glucose. The glucose then circulates in your blood where it waits to enter cells to be used as fuel. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move the glucose into cells. A healthy pancreas adjusts the amount of insulin based on the level of glucose. But, if you have diabetes, this process breaks down, and blood sugar levels become too high.

There are two main types of full-blown diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are completely unable to produce insulin. People with Type 2 diabetes can produce insulin, but their cells don't respond to it. In either case, the glucose can't move into the cells and blood glucose levels can become high. Over time, these high glucose levels can cause serious complications.

There are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Some of them come from our family history and genetics, but some can be turned around to help reverse or prevent the disease. Symptoms include; frequent trips to the bathroom, unquenchable thirst, losing weight without trying, weakness and fatigue, tingling and numbness in hands, legs or feet.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to death, heart disease, kidney failure, leg infections, and other serious health problems.

LEUKEMIA

Leukemia is cancer that starts in the tissue that forms blood. This is a disease that actually affects children, men and women. The chance of surviving is always very slim if not diagnosed early. Women respond differently to treatment and might lead to other damage of its reproductive system,if proper measure is not taken. In a person with leukemia, the bone marrow makes abnormal white blood cells. The abnormal cells are leukemia cells. Unlike normal blood cells, leukemia cells don't die when they should. People with leukemia are at significantly increased risk for developing infections, anemia, and bleeding.
The symptoms of leukemia depend on the number of leukemia cells and where these cells collect in the body. People with chronic leukemia may not have symptoms. The doctor may find the disease during a routine blood test.

People with acute leukemia usually go to their doctor because they feel sick. If the brain is affected, they may have headaches, vomiting, confusion, loss of muscle control, or seizures. Leukemia also can affect other parts of the body such as the digestive tract, kidneys, lungs, heart, or testes.

Common symptoms of chronic or acute leukemia may include: swollen lymph nodes that usually don't hurt (especially lymph nodes in the neck or armpit), fever or night sweats, frequent infections, feeling weak or tired, bleeding and bruising easily (bleeding gums, purplish patches in the skin, or tiny red spots under the skin), swelling or discomfort in the abdomen (from a swollen spleen or liver), weight loss for no known reason, pain in the bones or joints

Diagnosis of leukemia is supported by findings of the medical history and examination, and examining blood under a microscope. Leukemia cells can be detected and further classified with a bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy. Most patients with leukemia are treated with chemotherapy. Some patients also may have radiation therapy and/or bone marrow transplantation.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy may damage the ovaries of an adult woman. Women may have irregular menstrual periods or periods may stop altogether. Women may have symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Women who may want to get pregnant in the future should ask their health care team about ways to preserve their eggs before treatment starts.

Is Mercy Aigbe’s Hubby Broke?

If rumours spreading like wild fire about the husband of Yoruba actress, Mercy Aigbe, are anything to go by, then the dude, Lanre Jentry, is seriously broke at the moment.

The Hotel La Veronique boss, who recently celebrated the birth of a baby boy by the actress, is said to be going through a financial crisis for sometime now.

Sources close to Larry Jent, as he is fondly called, said he has no car at the moment. His grey-coloured Tuareg car has been seized because he was unable to complete the payment for the car.

He was said to have bought the SUV from one Architect Tunde Ojo, who had to retrieve the vehicle when all efforts to get his balance payment from Larry Jent proved abortive.

According to the source, “the financial recess is everywhere in the world, and Larry Jent is also affected. It is true that he has no car now, but I hope he will sort things out soon. If Mercy had not been involved in an accident with her Honda Element SUV, both of them would have been managing it, at least for now.”

Jim Iyke Disappoints UK Fans

The United Kingdom Celebrity Premiere of the movie, 2 Dollaz has come and gone, but it was a tough day and fans, especially those that bought the VIP tickets, will not forget in a hurry.

The Jim Iyke movie was premiered at the Odeon Cinema, Bugsby Way, Greenwich, UK on Friday, 12 November last year. And it paraded other movie stars like Mercy Johnson, Sam Loco and Victoria Inyama.

NollywoodReel gathered that the fans who paid more than 20 pounds to watch the premiere were disappointed as the organisers did not live up to expectations.

While campaigning for the show, the organisers had promised that there will be a VIP section, which will be demarcated from the regular side, which was why the admission fee differed, but there was nothing like that. Those that paid for the VIP seats were sandwiched with the regulars.

According to a fan who bought the VIP ticket, “my friends and I were very disappointed because there was no VIP section at all. Besides, there were no seats at all, so we were asked to watch the show standing. We actually left in annoyance because we could not pay that much and put up with such inconvenience.”

They also told NollywoodReel that when they tried to complain to Jim Iyke, he snubbed them.

I wrote 'Instinct' on my sick bed — K1

Over the week, the much awaited three-in-one album of K1 de Ultimate, 'Instinct' finally hit the streets of Lagos. It is expected to reach other parts of the country by the end of next week. The album is a 18-tracker with two bonus jazz mixes. Omega music owned by K1 de Ultimate himself released the album while, it is being marketed by High Kay Dancet Ltd.

The 'King of Fuji' said in a chat that he wrote and composed all the songs while on his sick bed in Canada for some months. 'When I was sick in Canada, I had a lot of time to myself and there was a lot of reflections and inspiration for me”. The result is a three CDs album.

The hit tracks on the album include, Igbayi da, My story, Iwalewa and Eke ni won. He also did songs in honour of the new Elegushi, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi and the Olofa of Offa.

Other special renditions include Oro Idibo which is meant to educate the listener on the power of their votes and reasons why they should use it right. Oro - Ife is a song where K1 featured Mimi, the 2010 winner of Star Quest, where she proved to be a winner any day with the use of her sonorous voice.

K1, while chatting with E-Center, said he could not have done the songs without God. “I give God the glory for giving me the grace for such a release after five years of flavours of which I was ill for three months, I am very excited, “ he said.

According to his manager, and producer, Percy Ademokun, one million copies of the album had been pre-ordered by retailers and marketers nationwide. 'The demand is so great, we had to shift its release dates severally so as to meet up with the demand,' Percy said.
